Dawson (1849-1901) as he travelled the prairies, Rockies, British Columbia, Yukon and beyond. These sketches are collected from his personal notebooks at McGill University Archives and his field notebooks at the National Archives from his work with the Geological Survey of Canada, of which he was Assistant Director (1883-) and Director (1895-1901). Raised in upper-class Victorian Montreal (his father Sir William was principal of McGill) he was well educated and, beyond his work as a scientist, excelled at drawing, watercolours and photography. Sketches have been selected from his personal notebooks at the McGill University Archives, as well as from his field notebooks at the National Library and Archives of Canada in relation to his work for the Geological Survey of Canada of which he was Assistant Director (1883-) and Director (1895-1901). Complete and unabridged with unpublished material, Dawson's observations during his 1878 survey of the Queen Charlotte Islands concerning the Haida culture are presented. In this he had a special interest as an anthropologist, over and above his work as a scientist for the Geological Survey of Canada. From 1875-1898 he explored the northwest coast, mapping, measuring, observing, writing, taking glass-plate photographs and drawing. His sketches from another 1878 notebook are included.
