George Smith (26. maaliskuuta 1840 - 19. elokuuta 1876) oli uraauurtava englantilainen assyriologi. Kirjan alkuosa sisältää värikkään katsauksen kaivauksiin, jotka toteutettiin vuosina 1873 ja 1874 Niniven paikalla ja niihin liittyviin matkoihin. Tähän kaivaustyöhön Smith sai rahoituksen Daily Telegraph-uutislehdeltä. Selostus tästä hänen työstään julkaistiin alkuvuodesta 1875 englanninkielisessä kirjassa Assyrian discoveries. Tämä historiallinen teos julkaistaan nyt suomenkielisenä laitoksena. Tässä on tehty joitakin pieniä ajan mukanaan tuomia muutoksia joihinkin paikannimiin ja muinaisten hallitsijoiden nimiin.
