There is so much about his best friend, Max, that is a mystery to Jeff. His fascination with guns. His hatred of Jews. His strange response when someone poisons the neighborhood dogs. He at times seems like a man to Jeff, and at other times is just a little boy. What is it about Max that makes Jeff want to be like him? And more important, what would Max think of him if he ever found out about Jeff's family? Based on a real event in his boyhood, Gerald Hausman's The Red Canoe tells the haunting story of boys trying to be men, only to discover the dangers of growing up too fast.

The Kebra Nagast is a sacred text originally written in 14th century Ethiopia. It tells the story of how the Queen of Sheba met the biblical King Solomon, and relates the birth of her son, Menilek, who became the legendary king of Ethiopia. A work of incredible cultural significance, The Kebra Nagast is far more than simply a piece of literature - it is a testament to richness of Ethiopian tradition and culture. In addition to its importance in Ethiopian traditions, the Kebra Nagast has become a key text for Rastafarians. The Kebra Nagast: The Lost Bible of Rastafarian Wisdom and Faith is the latest title in the Essential Wisdom Library series, which brings sacred texts from all traditions to modern readers. This new edition of the book includes a foreword by Ziggy Marley, which explores the importance of the Kebra Nagast as a powerful and sacred text both in Rastafarian tradition and in a broader sense. A clean, fresh design and inside cover printing give this ancient text modern appeal.

An unusual and magical story based on the historic "Long Walk" of the Navajo. With his tribe decimated, his parents murdered, one boy manages to escape from the forced migration to Fort Sumner. With his shaman grandfather, the two seek the powerful coyote beads belonging to the tribe. If they can find them, they can balance the opposing energies of peace and war, and save Dineh, the people. This novel, based on many interviews does not describe the forced march of 350 miles. Instead it tells the untold story of those resistant Navajos who stayed behind on their own land and fought for what was theirs.

Hand Trembler is about one man's emergence through Native rituals as he travels through the mythical underworlds of the Navajo. Actual Hand Tremblers, though few exist today, do live on the Navajo reservation and they still perform their ancient art of divination: finding the cause of illness, lost objects and even missing people. The narrator is a hand trembling diviner whose particular art involves shapeshifting. This dangerous skill leaves him trapped between worlds and shifting identities while being hunted by a brutal extra-terrestrial enemy. As the novel progresses, the narrator encounters his long lost friend Etienne, the French/Filipino healer; Joogii, the mind reading Navajo artist and mythologist; and Al-lan, the star traveller. In a series of amusing and suspenseful misadventures, the author takes us on a spin through the intricate cosmology of the Navajo, giving us yet another close look at the deities who inform this mysterious and beautiful culture. "The eccentricity, lunacy, magic, and malevolence that lurk beneath the surface... Set against the night country of New Mexico is a mystery that has never been solved. The novel follows the footsteps of a young reporter who has been assigned to witness a series of bizarre cattle mutilations. In his search for truth, he interviews tribal elders, scientists, FBI agents, state police, mediums, mystics, cattle and horse ranchers, and many other observers living in the high desert of northern New Mexico. One of his interviewees is a scientist who claims to have been taken aboard a "star car." A Navajo medicine man confirms that he was abducted as well. A tribal friend tells the author: "There is a hole in the sky and things are coming out of it." PRAISE FOR GERALD HAUSMAN "If you're hungry for a book to keep you up past bedtime-with all the lights on-this tale is for you. Based on real unsolved mysteries, Evil Chasing Way deals with startling animal deaths that some attribute to aliens, skinwalkers, secret government research or a force of true evil. This is New Mexico's own X File anchored in Hausman's elegant prose and finely tuned descriptions of the Southwestern landscape." -Anne Hillerman, author of Song of the Lion

"Not since Mark Twain has a writer presented classic American storytelling so honestly. Hausman is at his best with this collection, truly entertaining." - Hilary Hemingway, author of "Hemingway in Cuba"The stories in NOT SINCE MARK TWAIN are a fleeting look at American life, primarily on the road, but sometimes on or in the water, and have been collected by Gerald Hausman since 1965. Some of the tales are very brief and may be called "sudden stories". Many of them deal with human survival - an autistic boy lost in a trackless swamp; a young woman who falls in love with a supernatural creature; a young man who finds himself by finding his horse. Some of the tales are mere messages left on a cell phone. Others, like the story "Bimini Blue" tell about a Navajo healing ceremony given to a famous author who committed suicide. There are stories of ghosts, demons, fearsome predators, and wise old men who take the innocent in hand and lead them on the road to wisdom. These are tales of innocence and anguish, fantasy and fable, humor and heart. In them we hear the voices of a lost America - an America of folk heroes fading fast from view and crying out to be heard. SOME OF THE STORIESA Real Life Goliath... The Horse of the Navajo... Lady Bug Blues... Big Fat Harry Toe... A Tree Frog Named Houdini... Just Like Geronimo... The Ancient Itch... Man Taken Aboard UFO... Pirate Breath... Snail... Rattlesnake Pete, Goiter Healer... Of Lions and Men.

Tracing their lineage back to King Solomon-the wisest man who ever lived- Rastafarians follow a spiritual tradition of peace and meditation that is more a way of life than an organised religion. During his 15 years living in Jamaica, Gerald Hausman developed deep friendships with Rastafarians and rootsmen, enabling him to experience firsthand the beliefs and traditions of these followers of the Kebra Nagast-the African gospel excised from the King James version of the Bible. He met bush doctors, Rasta preachers, members of the Marley family and respected elders who knew Marcus Garvey, prophet of the Rasta movement and vocal proponent of the Pan-African movement in America. He, also, met elders who were present when Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia and descendant of the House of David, came to Jamaica in the 1960s. Through interviews with fishermen, mystics and wise men, as well as direct encounters with spirits and the spiritual, the author reveals the deep wisdom that underlies the "old ways" of the Rastas. He connects their stories, lives and teachings with important biblical passages as well as reggae songs. He shares their views on the medicinal and meditative powers of cannabis-the sacred herb of Solomon-and explains that while Rastas believe it to be "the opener of the door," they maintain that peace and understanding must be found within. Illustrating the unwavering faith and hope of the Rastafari of Jamaica, Hausman shows them to be a people who, above all, emphasise equality, because the Holy Spirit within each of us makes us all one and the same. · Includes the author's interviews with bush doctors, healers and Rastafarians gathered during his 15 years of living in Jamaica · Reveals the old ways of the Rastafarians and how their beliefs form an unbroken lineage tracing back to King Solomon · Explains the connection of Rasta beliefs to important biblical passages
