Gerhart Hauptmann

Nobelpristagaren Gerhart Hauptmanns texter befolkas av skuggexistenser och drömgestalter, hos vilka villfarelser och verklighet blandas. Banvaktare Thiel berättar om hur en hjärtegod om än en något tungsint och aningen tafatt man, en from troende, en pedantiskt samvetsgrann och enkel järnvägstjänsteman, som älskar lugn och ro och barn, förvandlas till en dubbelmördare. Karnevalstid berättar om segelmakare Kielblock och hans unga fru Mariechen och deras korta äktenskap som är en enda lång fest, fram till dess att katastrofen slår till en mörk vinternatt. I Aposteln möter vi en extremt blygsam och anspråkslös man som tar in på ett härbärge i Zürich. Den vita munkkåpan och det långa, blonda håret väcker uppmärksamhet. ”Aposteln” tycker om sin roll, men emellanåt känner han en stor ängslan, djupt i sitt inre. Han rycks ständigt med av sina översvallande känslor. Gränsen mellan verklighet och inbillning suddas ut, utan att han rår över det. Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946) föddes i tyska Schlesien inte långt från Breslau (i dag Wroclaw). Han var inte bara verksam som dramatiker utan skrev även romaner och lyrik. Hauptmanns författarskap har gjort stort avtryck inom naturalismen och symbolismen. Som hans tre viktigaste verk brukar nämnas de två pjäserna »Vävarna«, »Före soluppgången« och prosatexten »Banvaktare Thiel«. Hauptmann tilldelades Nobelpriset i litteratur 1912.
