The Trojan Women of Euripides. The Trojan Women, also known as Troades, is a tragedy by the Greek playwright Euripides. Produced in 415 BC during the Peloponnesian War, it is often considered a commentary on the capture of the Aegean island of Melos and the subsequent slaughter and subjugation of its populace by the Athenians earlier that year. 415 BC was also the year of the scandalous desecration of the hermai and the Athenians' second expedition to Sicily, events which may also have influenced the author. The Trojan Women was the third tragedy of a trilogy dealing with the Trojan War. The first tragedy, Alexandros, was about the recognition of the Trojan prince Paris who had been abandoned in infancy by his parents and rediscovered in adulthood. The second tragedy, Palamedes, dealt with Greek mistreatment of their fellow Greek Palamedes. This trilogy was presented at the Dionysia along with the comedic satyr play Sisyphos. The plots of this trilogy were not connected in the way that Aeschylus' Oresteia was connected. Euripides did not favor such connected trilogies.

This edition of Gilbert Murray's renowned examination of how religion evolved in Ancient Greece, includes all of his original notes. Murray was a renowned scholar of Greek classics, who used his academic background as grounding for this astonishingly detailed book on the topic of the Olympian Gods. How the pantheon of Gods was conceived, and grew to eventually define large aspects of Ancient Greek culture, form the topics at hand. The book begins by examining the earliest surviving religious texts of Greek, identifying the first indications of the Gods in the lore. The increasing prevalence of writing among Greece's educated citizenry sparked a growth in the number of Gods and Goddesses, and the stories relating to them. However, Murray is careful to note that there is no single event or turning point. For a scholarly work, Five Stages of Greek Religion is of modest length. This attribute defines it as a superb introductory primer to aspects of Olympian religion.

This edition of the Greek classic play Medea by Euripides is translated by well-regarded scholar of classics Gilbert Murray, who offers the reader a vivid yet accurate interpretation of the play. Medea is imperiled as her husband plans to leave her for another woman. Angry at having been abandoned for a Corinthian princess, Medea enacts vengeance befitting her status as a barbarian queen: she slays her former husband's new wife and their children, before absconding to Athens where she begins a new life. Ever since its publication over 2,400 years ago, Medea has been considered a shocking work of fiction, primarily for its violent and malevolent scenes. Despite these horrific events, it was Euripides portrayal of Medea as a sympathetic antihero frustrated by a world of male dominance which won over audiences. Owing to this nuanced depiction, Medea the play and Medea the character has become well-regarded by feminists. It remains the most popular and performed drama by Euripides in the modern day.

Authoritatively translated by scholar and academic Gilbert Murray, this edition of Bacchae by Euripides is of high quality, allowing the reader ease of interpretation. Famously premiered at the Theatre of Dionysus in 405 B. C., this play is concerned with displaying two sides of human nature. One side is embodied by Pentheus - the King of Thebes - who employs reason, logic and forethought in his behaviour. The impulsive and rash side to man, operating on hunches and instinct, finds its embodiment in Dionysus. With this as his basis, Euripides offers us a tragic plotline which explores the connections between man and beast in highlighting that completely ignoring Dionysus' approach is perilous, for its denies the soul a kind of spiritualism which all living beings experience and live among.

The Agamemnon of Aeschylus - The sense of difficulty, and indeed of awe, with which a scholar approaches the task of translating the Agamemnon depends directly on its greatness as poetry. It is in part a matter of diction. The language of Aeschylus is an extraordinary thing, the syntax stiff and simple, the vocabulary obscure, unexpected, and steeped in splendour. This book collects together four essays by the very well-known academic Gilbert Murray that were first presented between 1914 and 1939. The author seeks to present a statement of his profound belief in ethics and disbelief in revelational religions. The philosophy of this great thinker is accessibly written while it addresses deep questions of the nature of morality and the basis of religions. This collection was first published in 1940.
The Arbitration (Routledge Revivals)
Gilbert Murray translated and made available to modern readers The Epitrepontes of Menander or The Arbitration for the first time in 1945. The Arbitration is among the most frequently quoted and most famous of Menander’s plays and – being less farcical than others - belongs to his mature style. With an interesting and informative introduction, this translation will be of value to any student of Classics and Ancient Greek drama.
Humanist Essays (Routledge Revivals)
First published in 1964, this is a short collection of both literary and philosophical essays. Whilst two essays consider Greek literature written at the point at which the Athenian empire was breaking apart, another group explore the background from which Christianity arose, considering Paganism and the religious philosophy at the time of Christ. These, in particular, display Gilbert Murray’s ‘profound belief in ethics and disbelief in all revelational religions’ as well as his conviction that the roots of our society lie within Greek civilization. Finally, there is an interesting discussion of Order and the motives of those who seek to overthrow it.
Liberality and Civilization (Routledge Revivals)
First published in 1938, these lectures argue that liberality is the foundation of civilization. According to Gilbert Murray, civilization provides the surplus of security, leisure and wealth that makes liberality possible; a failure of liberality is the surest test of the failure of a civilization. This is a fascinating reissue that will be of great value to students with an interest in political philosophy and the foundations of liberal society.
