What is Fascism is a collection of essays, newspaper articles and interviews, discourses and polemics on the subject of fascism by Giovanni Gentile (AD 1875-1944), the "philosopher of Fascism." The collection was written (or spoken and later transcribed) over the course of several years prior to its publication in book format, in 1925, under the Italian title of Che cosa il fascismo. Trained as a philosopher, Giovanni Gentile spent many years as an academic, writing books and teaching. He held multiple posts as professor of philosophy, at various Italian universities including the University of Rome. Later, he served as the Minister of Public Education during the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini. His major contribution to the history of philosophy includes his own brand of absolute idealism, or new-Hegelianism, known as "actual idealism." Readers new to Gentile, or to fascism in general, may be surprised, if not shocked, depending on their political leanings, to understand how close fascism is or was to the liberalism of the 19th century. "Seeing that, in part, fascism is liberalism: at least the liberalism of men who sincerely believed in freedom, and had however an austere concept of it... liberalism, as I understand it and as the men of the glorious Right of the Risorgimento understood it, the liberalism of freedom in the laws and consequently in the strong State and in the State conceived of as an ethical reality."

Giovanni Gentile is widely acknowledged as the foundational philosopher of Italian Fascism. He worked in academia as well as government, contributing to the formation of the Italian corporate state and education system under Bennito Mussolini. Gentile continued writing and contributing to the Italian Fascist state until his assassination by the Italian Communist Party in 1944. In The Philosophy of Marx, Gentile critiques the failures of Marxist philosophy as presented by numerous thinkers including Marx himself. Gentile argues that Marx erred in his conception of historical materialism, which led to flaws in Marxist praxis, and presents his view of a more authentically Hegelian philosophy of dialectics and epistemology. According to Gentile, who promoted what he termed "actual idealism," the dialectic was not a mystical, external force, but rather an organic element of life, and required a strong, central state, which could coordinate and fulfill otherwise competing and struggling identities and interests. Gentile's philosophy is on the one hand unexpectedly simple, but on the other somewhat difficult to understand for those who are not well versed with German and Italian idealism. Gentile follows a certain current in Italian philosophy based on a "Fichte-ised" Hegel, but carries it to its extremes. For Gentile, the transcendental point of view is found in the reality of our thought when thought is considered not as a completed act but as an act-in-act, so to speak. This is probably the leit-motiv of Gentile's philosophy: the radical negation of the proposition that one can detach oneself from one's thought, even thoughts already thought. Thought is always in action, what he called "autoctisis". This is the first book in which Gentile's philosophy appears. Gentile's contribution to philosophy is not only important because of its originality but also because Gentile was Fascism's philosopher and his legacy is still felt today.
