In recent years, new mathematical methods and tools have been developed and - plied extensively in the ?eld of aerospace engineering, for example, ?nite element method, computational ?uiddynamics, optimization, control, eigenvalues problems. The interaction between aerospace engineering and mathematics has been sign- cant in the past for both engineers and mathematicians and will be even stronger in the future. This volume is an excellent guide for anyone interested in variational analysis, optimization, and PDEs. It offers a detailed presentation of the most important tools in variational analysis as well as applications to problems in geometry, mechanics, elasticity, and computer vision. Among the new elements in this second edition: the section of Chapter 5 on capacity theory and elements of potential theory now includes the concepts of quasi-open sets and quasi-continuity; Chapter 6 includes an increased number of examples in the areas of linearized elasticity system, obstacles problems, convection-diffusion, and semilinear equations; Chapter 11 has been expanded to include a section on mass transportation problems and the Kantorovich relaxed formulation of the Monge problem; a new subsection on stochastic homogenization in Chapter 12 establishes the mathematical tools coming from ergodic theory, and illustrates them in the scope of statistically homogeneous materials; Chapter 16 has been augmented by examples illustrating the shape optimization procedure; and Chapter 17 is an entirely new and comprehensive chapter devoted to gradient flows and the dynamical approach to equilibria.

Optimal Urban Networks via Mass Transportation

Optimal Urban Networks via Mass Transportation

Recently much attention has been devoted to the optimization of transportation networks in a given geographic area. One assumes the distributions of population and of services/workplaces (i.e. the network's sources and sinks) are known, as well as the costs of movement with/without the network, and the cost of constructing/maintaining it. Both the long-term optimization and the short-term, "who goes where," optimization are considered. These models can also be adapted for the optimization of other types of networks, such as telecommunications, pipeline or drainage networks. In the monograph we study the most general problem settings, namely, when neither the shape nor even the topology of the network to be constructed is known a priori.
Variational Methods in Shape Optimization Problems

Variational Methods in Shape Optimization Problems

The fascinating ?eld of shape optimization problems has received a lot of attention in recent years, particularly in relation to a number of applications in physics and engineering that require a focus on shapes instead of parameters or functions. The goal of these applications is to deform and modify the admissible shapes in order to comply with a given cost function that needs to be optimized. In this respect the problems are both classical (as the isoperimetric problem and the Newton problem of the ideal aerodynamical shape show) and modern (re?ecting the many results obtained in the last few decades). The intriguing feature is that the competing objects are shapes, i.e., domains of N R , instead of functions, as it usually occurs in problems of the calculus of va- ations. This constraint often produces additional dif?culties that lead to a lack of existence of a solution and to the introduction of suitable relaxed formulations of the problem. However, in certain limited cases an optimal solution exists, due to the special form of the cost functional and to the geometrical restrictions on the class of competing domains.

Leading researchers in the field of Optimal Transportation, with different views and perspectives, contribute to this Summer School volume: Monge-Ampère and Monge-Kantorovich theory, shape optimization and mass transportation are linked, among others, to applications in fluid mechanics granular material physics and statistical mechanics, emphasizing the attractiveness of the subject from both a theoretical and applied point of view. The volume is designed to become a guide to researchers willing to enter into this challenging and useful theory.

The study of shape optimization problems is a very wide field, both classical, as the isoperimetric problem and Newton problem of the best aerodynamical shape show, and modern, for all the recent results obtained in the last two, three decades. The fascinating feature is that the competing objects are shapes, i.e. domains of Rn, instead of functions, as usually occurs in problems of calculus of variations. This constraint often produces additional difficulties that lead to a lack of existence of a solution and the introduction of suitable relaxed formulations of the problem. However, in a few cases an optimal solution exists, due to the special form of the cost functional and to the geometrical restriction on the class of competing domains. This volume collects the lecture notes of two courses given in the academic year 2000/01 by the authors at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Normale Superiore respectively. The courses were mainly addressed to Ph. D. students and required a background in the topics in functional analysis that are usually taught in undergraduate courses.
One-dimensional Variational Problems

One-dimensional Variational Problems

One-dimensional variational problems have been somewhat neglected in the literature on calculus of variations, as authors usually treat minimal problems for multiple integrals which lead to partial differential equations and are considerably more difficult to handle. One-dimensional problems are connected with ordinary differential equations, and hence need many fewer technical prerequisites, but they exhibit the same kind of phenomena and surprises as variational problems for multiple integrals. This book provides an modern introduction to this subject, placing special emphasis on direct methods. It combines the efforts of a distinguished team of authors who are all renowned mathematicians and expositors. Since there are fewer technical details graduate students who want an overview of the modern approach to variational problems will be able to concentrate on the underlying theory and hence gain a good grounding in the subject. Except for results from the theory of measure and integration and from the theory of convex functions, the text develops all mathematical tools needed, including the basic results on one-dimensional Sobolev spaces, absolutely continuous functions, and functions of bounded variation.
