We Can Be Heroes

In the early 1980s, when a small group of misfits began acting out their nocturnal fantasies, London nightlife blossomed and fashion, music and clubbing would never be the same again. Against the backdrop of recession-hit Britain, this was the birth of club fashion, style magazines, futuristic synth pop and blue-eyed funk. Energised by punk's do-it-yourself attitude and David Bowie's ceaseless image shifting, a new generation of pop stars, designers, journalists, artists and filmmakers emerged, adopting wild, theatrical attire and an ethos of continual change. Led by the enigmatic Steve Strange and the ever dapper Chris Sullivan, their scene flourished in a succession of legendary clubs: from Billy's and the Blitz via Le Beat Route and the Mud Club, to the Wag and the Dirt Box. It gave us stars including Boy George, Sade and Spandau Ballet, as well as the faces who would shape London nightlife up to the rave era. The press dubbed these nightbirds the New Romantics; in truth this was just one stage of their endless reinvention. Together with his schoolmate, future broadcaster Robert Elms, and art-school buddy Chris Sullivan, Graham Smith was at the centre of this creative cult. He designed its record sleeves, cultivated its graphics and captured its characters, taking extraordinary pictures throughout the period, most of which have never been reproduced before. There are interviews with all the major players, incendiary and hilarious text by Chris Sullivan, an introduction by Robert Elms and forewords by Boy George, Steve Strange and Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp. This beautiful book is the first insider account of this uniquely creative time.

Photography and travel have been linked since 1839, when Daguerre and Talbot first made their inventions known to the public. The inventors and their advocates immediately recognised photography's capability to vividly represent the spectacles of the world, and make them accessible to the general public in the comfort of their homes. The unquestionable connection between photography and travel remains vital today. In Photography and Travel, Graham Smith provides a lively account of this partnership, discussing the diverse applications of photography to travel during the nineteenth century, in destinations as exotic as France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Japan and North America. He then moves to the twentieth century, ranging from seaside excursions to transcontinental travel by rail, road and air. As it has become more democratized, the methods and experiences of travel have developed in many unexpected directions, all of which have created their own new photographic narratives. Photography and Travel shows that photographers have often gone to great lengths - at considerable personal danger - to record exotic destinations, from the ice caves and crevasses of the Mer de Glace to the maw of Vesuvius, the summit of Mount Everest and even the pock-marked surface of the moon. Photography and Travel provides a fascinating account of the 170-year partnership of photography and travel. Featuring a wealth of images from all over the world, the book will fascinate intrepid photographers as well as experienced - and armchair - explorers everywhere.

Politics and the Environment has established itself as one of the most comprehensive textbooks in this area. This new edition has been completely revised and updated whilst retaining the features and the theory-to-practice focus which made the first two editions so successful. This text is designed to introduce students to the key concepts and issues which surround environmental problems and their political solutions. The authors investigate the people, movements and organisations that form and implement these policies, and explore the barriers which hinder successful introduction of international environmental politics. The 3rd edition has been expanded to include: The shift in focus in environmental politics from sustainable development to climate change governance An extensive discussion on climate change: including institutional, national and global responses in the aftermath of the Kyoto protocol An increased international focus with more case studies from the UK, Europe, Australia and North America More discussion of global environmental social movements: including the US environmental organisations, in particular the Green Party and the environmental justice groups This textbook is an invaluable and accessible resource for undergraduates studying environmental politics.

Connecting Landlocked Developing Countries to Markets

Connecting Landlocked Developing Countries to Markets

This book aims to help the policymaker and development community in general to understand the nature of the problems and policy dilemmas that landlocked countries face to trade with the rest of the World. This volume presents an important breakthrough in the literature, by focusing on a new conceptual framework that challenges the previous paradigm based on physical infrastructure and state-led access solutions, embodied in many treaties. By recognizing that the main access problems for landlocked countries occur in the territory of the transit country, this volume provides a new approach to understand the set of incentives that drive the political economy and shape the institutions governing goods' transit along corridors. Overall, the policy levers available to overcome these barriers are based on universally applied principles, recognizing the need for re-engineering current transit regimes which have been implemented with little success outside Europe. A risk-approach to border control and technology use, along with trust building between private operators and public agencies, all point toward the need to encourage and formally recognize higher-quality trucking companies. Meanwhile, other modes of transportation represent an alternative to road transit, but they also entail disadvantages, suggesting that their role is likely to remain limited to niche segments, specific commodities and exceptional market circumstances.

This book is concerned with the presence of familiar objects in unfamiliar places. It examines the literary practice of inserting imaginary photographs of art, architecture, and people into novels and short stories. These photographs are fictive objects, although some, especially those of art and architecture, have equivalents in real life. The book examines the presence of invented photographs in the writings of six authors who made extensive use of this practice. The first part of the book concentrates on E. M. Forster, while also including some discussion of imaginary photographs in Sinclair Lewis's novel Main Street. The second part of the book analyses the uses of photographs in the writings of Forster's near contemporaries, with separate chapters being devoted to Henry James, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf. An epilogue touches on Christopher Isherwood, a member of the next generation of British writers. The book focuses upon largely unexplored areas in the writings of these authors - what Virginia Woolf in 'Modern Fiction' styled 'un-expected places'.
Deliberative Democracy and the Environment
Contemporary democracies are frequently criticized for failing to respond adequately to environmental problems and our political institutions are often charged with misrepresenting environmental values in decision-making processes. In this innovative volume, Graham Smith argues that the enhancement and institutionalisation of democratic deliberation will improve reflection on the wide range of environmental values that citizens hold. Drawing on theories of deliberative democracy, Smith argues that institutions need to be restructured in order to promote democratic dialogue and reflection on the plurality of environmental values. Deliberative Democracy and the Environment makes an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between democratic and green political theory. Drawing on evidence from Europe and the United States, it systematically engages with questions of institutional design.

Clearly demonstrates the specific characteristics that make for comprehensible, friendly and controllable places; 'Responsive Environments' - as opposed to the alienating environments often imposed today. By means of sketches and diagrams, it shows how they may be designed in to places or buildings. This is a practical book about architecture and urban design. It is most concerned with the areas of design which most frequently go wrong and impresses the idea that ideals alone are not enough. Ideals must be linked through appropriate design ideas to the fabric of the built environemnt itself. This book is a practical attempt to show how this can be done.
