Orthodontics is a dynamic and evolving field that requires a deep understanding of both fundamental principles and being abreast with newer advancements. In this digital era, there is an endless access to published literature and books at the disposal of students and professionals. Especially for the student pursuing postgraduation in Orthodontics, shortlisting important and relevant published literature from this vast resource is often a dilema and requires investment of considerable time. This book has been written with the postgraduate students in mind in the form of simplified notes on important topics in orthodontics using an exhaustive reference to the relevant literature. This book will be first of a series, with each book to follow covering several important topics in orthodontics. These notes can be helpful in preparing academic seminars or can be used to brush up important topics at the time of examination. It is hoped that this effort will appeal to all students of orthodontics.

Traditionnellement consid r comme une modalit de traitement pour les adolescents, le nombre d'adultes qui demandent un traitement orthodontique a augment de mani re significative. Cette demande accrue de traitement est due l' volution des modes de vie et une sensibilisation accrue la th rapie orthodontique. Il est important que l'orthodontiste comprenne que les besoins de traitement, les proc dures cliniques et les priorit s du patient orthodontique adulte diff rent consid rablement de ceux des jeunes. Alors que les jeunes peuvent rechercher une correction orthodontique pour des raisons esth tiques, les adultes peuvent donner la priorit un traitement visant restaurer une fonction occlusale normale ainsi qu' l'efficacit et la commodit du traitement. L'aumento della domanda di trattamento dovuto al cambiamento dello stile di vita e alla maggiore consapevolezza della terapia ortodontica. importante che l'ortodontista si renda conto che le esigenze di trattamento, le procedure cliniche e le priorit del paziente ortodontico adulto differiscono notevolmente da quelle del giovane. Mentre i giovani possono cercare una correzione ortodontica per motivi estetici, gli adulti possono dare priorit al trattamento per ripristinare la normale funzione occlusale, nonch all'efficienza e alla convenienza del trattamento. I progressi dell'ortodonzia hanno reso il trattamento pi confortevole e pi efficace che mai per le persone di tutte le et . La collaborazione del trattamento ortodontico con altre specialit odontoiatriche per fornire una terapia odontoiatrica multidisciplinare ha permesso una migliore gestione delle esigenze pi complicate e uniche dell'adulto. Questo lavoro illustra la portata, i benefici, le modalit di trattamento disponibili, l'efficacia e i limiti del trattamento ortodontico dell'adulto.

Traditionally considered as a treatment modality for the teen and adolescent, there has been in significant increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment. This increased demand for treatment has been due to changed lifestyles and increased awareness about orthodontic therapy. It is important that the orthodontist realizes that the treatment needs, clinical procedures and patient priorities for the adult orthodontic patient differ significantly from the young. While the young may seek orthodontic correction for aesthetics, the adults may prioritize treatment for restoring normal occlusal function as well as treatment efficiency and convenience. Advances in orthodontics have made treatment more comfortable and more successful than ever for people of all ages. Collaborating orthodontic treatment with other dental specialties to provide multidisciplinary dental therapy has allowed better management of the more complicated and unique requirements of the adult. This work outlines the scope, benefits, the available treatment modalities, the effectiveness and limitations of adult orthodontic treatment.
