The diversity of H. P. Lovecraft's correspondents is exemplified in this volume, as are important aspects of his literary and professional career. His involvement with the pulp magazine Weird Tales is reflected in letters to J. C. Henneberger (the magazine's owner) and its first two editors, Edwin Baird and Farnsworth Wright. Here we learn little-known details of the magazine's initial year of publication, Lovecraft's work as ghostwriter for Harry Houdini, a proposed collection of his stories that the magazine was planning to issue, and other vital subjects. Philosophy is the dominant concern in the letters to an obscure Vermont correspondent, Woodburn Harris. Harris was a curious mix of radical politics and social na vet , and Lovecraft's long, argumentative letters run the gamut of subject-matter: female sexuality, the fall of the Roman Empire, the distinction between ethics, and much more. Lovecraft's work as a revisionist is fully exhibited in the letters to Zealia Bishop (many of which came to light only recently) and William Lumley. But Lovecraft never lost his devotion to amateur journalism, and his late letters to Walter J. Coates, editor of Driftwind, tell of his fascination with Coates's promotion of a distinctive literary and political culture in his native Vermont. As with preceding volumes of this series, all the letters in this volume have been meticulously edited by careful comparison with original manuscripts, and have been exhaustively annotated by S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz.

Throughout his life, H. P. Lovecraft corresponded with a wide array of correspondents-in the amateur journalism movement, the world of pulp magazines, and elsewhere. This volume contains small batches of letters to these correspondents. A major inclusion is the surviving correspondence of two round-robin groups, the Kleicomolo and the Gallomo, wherein Lovecraft expatiates on his cosmic philosophy. Also included here are letters to C. M. Eddy and his wife, friends and colleagues in Providence; the few scraps of surviving letters to his future wife, Sonia H. Greene; letter to such pulpsmiths as Seabury Quinn and Carl Jacobi; and a significant tranche of letters to the little-known Robert Hartley Michael, to whom Lovecraft presented an encapsulated autobiography and also elucidated the incantation included in "The Horror at Red Hook." This volume also contains letters published in Lovecraft's lifetime. These include letters he sent on a broad range of topics to the Providence Journal (on astronomy, band concerts, the hollow-earth theory, etc.); his notorious letters to the Munsey magazines attacking the romance stories of Fred Jackson; his debates on science with Orville L. Leach and J. F. Hartmann; and letters to the Haldeman-Julius Weekly on his personal philosophy. All told, these letters present the full spectrum of Lovecraft's intellectual and literary interests, affording rare glimpses into his evolving character. All documents have been meticulously edited and annotated by David E. Schultz and S. T. Joshi.

Behold, the very first appearance of Cthulhu in Lovecraft's literature Published in 1928 in "Weird Tales" magazine, comes The Call of Cthulhu, wherein H. P. Lovecraft throws down the gauntlet in the horror genre, drawing forth from his dreams and imagination all the dark things. The Cthulhu 'myth' would take on a life of its own, as so many 'myths' do. In this way, the myth declares that it is singularly alive--true, it lives only in the minds of men, but such myths leap over generations and grow into their own thing. Readers then encounter the myth rather than create it, even as the myth's existence depends on readers encountering it. It would not do justice to Lovecraft's storytelling to attempt to explain what the various parts The Call of Cthulhu might represent, especially as the narrative unfolded into later works. Indeed, Lovecraft himself likely wouldn't have tried. Some things are just better that way.

American author H. P. Lovecraft penned the science fiction/horror short tale "The Colour Out of Space" in March 1927. The story is told by an unidentified narrator who fits together the history of a region called the "blasted heath" by the inhabitants. The narrator discovers that a meteorite struck there many years ago and poisoned all the native fauna. Over fifty years earlier, in June 1882, a meteorite struck Nahum property. After taking a sample from the meteorite, local experts are baffled by its behavior. A globule enclosed in the meteorite that emits an odd hue is discovered by the experts. It was unrelated to anything that was recognized in the visible spectrum. After being hit by lightning, the meteorite vanishes overnight. Nahum chooses to keep Mrs. Gardner locked up in the attic after she goes crazy. Nahum's son Thaddeus likewise suffers from madness. While taking water from the polluted well, Merwin disappears. Their sole communication with the outer world is Pierce. The colour starts to spill out of the well as they consider what they have found in the home. Only Pierce sees a remnant of the colour makes a fleeting attempt to climb but fails.

H. P. Lovecraft wrote the short story "The Whisperer in Darkness." It was written between February and September 1930 and first appeared in Weird Tales in August 1931. It is a horror/science fiction hybrid, similar to "The Color Out of Space" (1927). Despite numerous references to the Cthulhu Mythos, the supernatural does not play many roles in the plot and therefore reflects Lovecraft's transformation to a sci-fi writer. Mi-Go, an alien race, is also introduced in the story. Much to the chagrin of Albert N. Wilmarth, local academic, bizzare things are sighted floating in rivers in the area of rural Vermont after a flood which consequently resurfaces the debates regarding an old myth of hill-dwelling monsters that abducts humans. However, Wilmarth is drawn into a surprising correspondence that leads to a troubling discovery when he begins receiving letters from an individual named Henry Wentworth Akeley which talks about the alleged presence close to his farmhouse of an extraterrestrial race worshipping ancient cosmic deities. "The Haunter of the Dark," "At the Mountains of Madness," "The Burial Place," and "The Lurker at the Threshold" are among the volumes that contain Lovecraft's supernatural tales.

H. P. Lovecraft's Fungi from Yuggoth is a remarkable achievement. Written in little more than a week (December 27, 1929-January 4, 1930), the cycle of 36 sonnets is a compact encapsulation of the essence of Lovecraft's imaginative vision. Its central motifs-the lure of hidden worlds, cosmic alienation, the terrors lurking behind the placid surface of life-are those that structured Lovecraft's greatest weird tales. David E. Schultz has spent decades preparing this annotated edition of the Fungi. He discusses the origin of the poem (including the influence of Donald Wandrei's similar cycle, Sonnets of the Midnight Hours), its connections with Lovecraft's fiction, Lovecraft's changing thoughts on natural expression in poetry, and the complex history of the poem's publication-both as individual sonnets and as a unity. Schultz also provides penetrating annotations on every poem. This volume features the superlative artwork of longtime Lovecraftian artist Jason C. Eckhardt, who has produced a poignant cover perhaps more Lovecraftian than most seen of late, and illustrated each poem in a separate full-page edition. Readers are also treated to a reproduction of Lovecraft's handwritten manuscript of the Fungi, which shows how carefully he revised each sonnet in the course of composition, and Harold S. Farnese's sheet music for two of the sonnets, most of it never published previously. This edition takes its place as a landmark contribution to Lovecraft studies-one that allows readers to appreciate Lovecraft's most famous poem as never before. David E. Schultz is the editor of an annotated edition of Lovecraft's Commonplace Book (1987) and coeditor, with S. T. Joshi, of numerous editions of Lovecraft's letters, including A Means to Freedom: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard (2009) and Dawnward Spire, Lonely Hill: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith (2017). Schultz's revised and annotated edition of H. P. Lovecraft: Commonplace Book is forthcoming from Hippocampus Press.
