Reproduction of the original: The Dunwich Horror by H. P. Lovecraft
In this second volume of the correspondence of H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, we find the two authors in the prime of their careers. Smith was publishing frequently in the weird and science fiction pulps of the day, compelled to earn money to take care of his ailing parents. Lovecraft had suffered some painful setbacks--the rejection of his work by Putnam's, Knopf, and other book publishers--but he was continuing to develop his Cthulhu Mythos, and Smith was making distinctive contributions to it. And yet, dark clouds were on the horizon. Smith's parents died in 1935 and 1937, and as a result his output of fiction declined significantly. Lovecraft kept his own ailment--cancer of the intestine--a secret from Smith and most other colleagues, so that his California friend was stunned to hear of his passing on March 15, 1937. Smith and Lovecraft shared many mutual acquaintances--Donald Wandrei, August Derleth, Robert E. Howard, R. H. Barlow, among others. Their accounts of meeting these and other colleagues, and their responses to other historical and cultural events of their time, present a fascinating window into the culture of the 1920s and 1930s. This volume in particular sheds light on the development of the early fantasy fandom movement, begun with the establishment of the Fantasy Fan in 1933. In an appendix, the entire "Boiling Point" controversy of 1933-34, centering around a story by Smith, is reprinted. The volume--the result of decades of research in accumulating and annotating the letters--has been meticulously edited by David E. Schultz and S. T. Joshi, two of the leading authorities on Lovecraft. Aside from an introduction and exhaustive notes, the editors have included in an appendix an array of additional documents that illuminate the Smith-Lovecraft relationship.

The publication of the complete extant correspondence of H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith is a landmark in the study of weird fiction. These two titans remained close colleagues for fifteen years, and their letters shed light not only on each writer's interest in the other's work but also on the literary culture in which they produced their distinctive work. Lovecraft began the correspondence by writing what can only be termed a fan letter to Smith in 1922, after receiving several volumes of Smith's early poetry volumes. At this time, Lovecraft had only begun his explorations in weird prose narrative, while Smith was exclusively devoted to poetry. The founding of Weird Tales in 1923 changed all that, as Lovecraft quickly became a fixture in the fledgling pulp magazine. As they continued to correspond, the two writers learned much about each other: Lovecraft, the solitary New Englander who unexpectedly uprooted himself to marry Sonia H. Greene and move to New York in 1924; Smith, the equally solitary Californian who was still under the poetic mentorship of George Sterling. In 1929-30, as Smith now took up the writing of fantasy and science fiction, the two authors engaged in a profound debate as to the nature of weird fiction. Lovecraft admitted that he was a "prose realist," while Smith claimed that "I am far happier when I can create everything in a story." Their discussions on the theory of the weird tale are some of the most illuminating pages in this book. The volume--the result of decades of research in accumulating and annotating the letters--has been meticulously edited by David E. Schultz and S. T. Joshi, two of the leading authorities on Lovecraft.
The world of amateur journalism that H. P. Lovecraft entered in 1914 introduced him to a variety of interesting and accomplished individuals, some of whom remained his colleagues for the rest of his life. One of these was Edward H. Cole, a writer and editor from Massachusetts whom Lovecraft met frequently in the succeeding two decades. The two discussed the byzantine world of amateur journalism in their long, if sporadic, correspondence. Cole introduced Lovecraft to John T. Dunn, a young man in the Providence area who helped to found the Providence Amateur Press Club. Dunn, as an outspoken Irish-American, clashed with Lovecraft repeatedly on the question of Irish independence. Some years later, Lovecraft became acquainted with Alfred Galpin, who proved to be a prodigy in the realms of literature, philosophy, and music. Their correspondence also lasted for decades and contains some of Lovecraft's most profound discussions of weird fiction, materialism, atheism, and other subjects. In the mid-1920s Lovecraft came in touch with Adolphe de Castro, a former colleague of Ambrose Bierce. Lovecraft struggled with revising de Castro's weird fiction, advised him on the writing of a memoir of Bierce, and in later years engaged in intense discussions regarding a treatise on early Christianity that de Castro was writing. Throughout these letters, Lovecraft reveals himself to be learned, courteous, patient, and at times outspoken, revealing many sides of his personality not always visible in his weird fiction. The letters have been thoroughly annotated, and a great deal of ancillary material by the correspondents in question has been supplied.

One of the first stories he wrote as an adult, it centres around the recollection of a tortured, morphine-addicted narrator who was captured by a German ship during World War I. After escaping his captors, he drifted for many miles before winding up stranded in a hellish place littered with rotting carcasses and home to an ancient horror.
