Religion of Love of Hafez of Shiraz: Selected Poems
RELIGION of LOVE of HAFEZ of SHIRAZ Selected Poems Translation & Introduction, Paul Smith "The 'religion' of Hafez was the love of God in human form and beyond all form, and this 'religion' Hafez proclaims in all his poetry, and this 'rel¬igion' Hafez lived throughout his life. To try to put Hafez into a box labelled this or that 'religion' is an impossible task because God is impossible to classify; God can only be lived and 'religion' is the creation of man, and God is the Creator of all of mankind." I first wrote this in 1986 after I had spent 12 years translating the complete 'Divan of Hafez'. Thirty years and many hundreds of books on the great Sufi & Bhakti poets later and after composing a Life of Hafez and many Plays & Movies etc. on him... I have felt the need to take from all of the ghazals in his Divan hundreds of his poems on love that he experienced from human love as a husband, father and lover of his Muse Shaikh-i-Nabat and as a lover of his Spiritual Master Mahmud Attar, to the Divine Love of a Perfect Master, or God in Human Form which he became about ten years before he passed on and which make up about half of his poems. 'Don't place your foot down in street of Love without a Guide: by myself, for myself, a hundred moves I willed, it wasn't to be. Fate decreed Love for me... wrote it on my forehead: whatever Fate has written is impossible to wipe away.' Hafez. Introduction: Life, Spirituality & Poetry, Notes, Selected Bibliography. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 281 pages. Goethe: "In his poetry Hafez inscribed undeniable truth indelibly He has no peer "Gertrude Bell: "It is as if his mental Eye, endowed with wonderful acuteness of vision, had penetrated into those provinces of thought which we of a later age were destined to inhabit." Meher Baba: "There is no equal to Hafez in poetry. He was a Perfect Master ... His Divan is the best book in the world because it engenders feelings which ultimately lead to illumination." Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish and other languages including Hafez, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Hallaj, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Seemab, Jigar, Iqbal, Ghalib, Lalla Ded, Ghani Kashmiri, Hali and many others, and his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, kids books and twelve screenplays. Hafez (1315-1390) on yksi persialaisen kirjallisuuden tunnetuimpia hahmoja. Valikoima on suomennettu suoraan alkukielestä.

Hafez is among the most celebrated of Persian mystic poets, thriving alongside such towering figures as Rumi and Saadi. Ubiquitous in Iran, he has also been hugely influential in the West. Interpreted variously as ardent mystic and lover, he fuses earthly and divine love with an intense constancy as momentously productive as Dante's courtly adoration for Beatrice. Across intimidating obstacles of time and culture, Beloved delivers an accessible yet authentic modern rendering of the Persian originals. Few translations of Hafez have matched his beauty, musicality and rich complexity. Combining vigour with ingenuity, Mario Petrucci reanimates for the English reader all of the moral clarity and sensual abundance of a spiritual and literary master. 'Petrucci's adaptations are a delight to read. They are fresh, candid, subtly humorous, and elegant. They have that audacious and multilayered richness one finds in the originals. Above all, they are uncompromising.' – Fatemeh Keshavarz, Director and Chair, Roshan Institute for Persian Studies, University of Maryland 'Mario Petrucci's new versions of Hafez are nuanced and thoughtful, embracing both the depth and the beauty of the original.' – Sasha Dugdale, Editor, Modern Poetry in Translation ‘Petrucci bases his engagement with Hafez on a special awareness... Everywhere, his delicate but probing selection of word and phrase uplifts and inspires.' – Michael Hakuzan Wenninger, Zen monk

Acclaimed translator Dick Davis breathes new life into the timeless works of three masters of fourteenth-century Persian literature. Together, Hafez, a giant of world literature; Jahan Malek Khatun, an eloquent princess; and Obayd-e Zakani, a dissolute satirist, represent one of the most remarkable literary flowerings of any era. All three lived in the famed city of Shiraz, a provincial capital of south-central Iran, and all three drew support from arts-loving rulers during a time better known for its violence than its creative brilliance. Here Dick Davis, an award-winning poet widely considered 'our finest translator of Persian poetry' (The Times Literary Supplement), presents a diverse selection of some of the best poems by these world-renowned authors and shows us the spiritual and secular aspects of love, in varieties embracing every aspect of the human heart. A Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Title for 2013Dick Davis is a translator, a poet, and a scholar of Persian literature who has published more than twenty books. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara and Ohio State University. He lives in Columbus, Ohio.

Molana Jalal Eldin Mohammad Balkhi Rumi is the most famous Iranian poet across the globe. His full name is Jalal Eldin Mohammad, known in the West as Rumi. Rumi's poems have been translated into many languages. Most of the translations are not from the original Farsi text, and with few exceptions, are done without the translator having the prerequisite knowledge of Persian language, culture, and history. Consequently, the formative beauty, musicality of Rumi's poems, their depth of meaning, and the mystical concepts therein, are lost in translation. Shahin Motallebi has made selected Rumi poems more accessible to Rumi fans by using contemporary English words, symbols, and imagery, while keeping their mystical meaning, beauty of form and musicality intact. Rumi With a View to other Persian Mystic Poets is a collection of poems by Rumi, from Ghazaliat Shams Tabrizi and Masnavi, and selected poems by other Perrsian mystic poets, namely Hafez, Saadi, Moshiri, Sepehri, Yooshij, and Azar.

Shamseddin Hafez, although born some six hundred years ago in southern Iran, is a contemporary and universal poet. Wherever Persian is known, he is easily recited by both King and common man. Even illiterates will recite a memorized verse of Hafez. Those uncertain about love, the future or any other situation, open a page of his collection of Poems at random and in it see their dilemmas untangled. His turn of phrase has enriched the Persian lexicon and, even more than Shakespeare in English, has entered everyday language. This has made him the Persian cultures most read, quoted and revered figure. His verse not only gives a panoramic insight into the culture of Persia but also window into understanding the universal soul. 202 of Hafez's ghazals have been translated in manner where the melody and the sense of the original still remains. The pages of this edition are in the uncut format.
