Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. This tragicomedy recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, unemotional father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared with Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships. Readers have sufficiently enjoyed the book to make it one of the more popular works of the Jamesian canon. Henry James (1843-1916) was an American-born British writer. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from a character's point of view allowed him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators brought a new depth to narrative fiction.

Set amid the splendor of London drawing rooms and gilded Venetian palazzos, The Wings of the Dove is the story of Milly Theale, a naive, doomed American heiress, and a pair of lovers, Kate Croy and Merton Densher, who conspire to obtain her fortune. In this witty tragedy of treachery, self-deception, and betrayal, Henry James weaves together three ill-fated and wholly human destinies unexpectedly linked by desire, greed, and salvation. As Amy Bloom writes in her Introduction, "The Wings of the Dove is a novel of intimacy. James gives us passion, he gives us love in its terrible and enchanting forms."

Lambert Strether, a middle-aged, yet not broadly experienced, man from Woollett, Massachusetts, agrees to assume a mission for his wealthy fianc e: go to Paris and rescue her son, Chad Newsome, from the clutches of a presumably wicked woman. On his journey, Strether stops in England and there meets Maria Gostrey, an American who has lived in Paris for years. Her cynical wit and worldly opinions start to rattle Strether's preconceived view of the situation. In Paris, Strether meets Chad and is impressed by the much greater sophistication Chad seems to have gained during his years in Europe. Chad takes him to a garden party, where Strether meets Marie de Vionnet, a lovely woman of impeccable manners, separated from her reportedly unpleasant husband, and Jeanne, her exquisite daughter. Strether is confused as to whether Chad is more attracted to the mother or the daughter. At the same time, Strether, himself, feels an overwhelming attraction to Marie de Vionnet, which he suspects she might requite, and so begins questioning his commitment to return to Woollett and marry Chad's mother, despite his admiration for her.

An absolute eye-awakening story. A beautiful, radiant girl is swept aside when she has to start wearing glasses. It was not usual for ladies to sport specs and the term "men don't make passes at girls that wear glasses" was not only true in the 19th-century but generally believed. A fun story especially when she goes blind and can no longer see herself. A nobleman refuses her but her steady companion loves her with or without the glasses. When I think of how fashionable glasses are today, it's almost unbelievable. Of course, the glasses at that time were anything but attractive, according to Mr. James.
The Portrait of a Lady (with an Introduction by Charles R. Anderson)
First published serially in "The Atlantic Monthly" between 1880 and 1881, Henry James' "The Portrait of a Lady" is widely regarded as one of the author's finest literary achievements. As is common with James' work a contrast is drawn between the cultural and social differences between America and Europe through the portrayal of American expatriates in Europe. The titular lady in question is that of Isabel Archer, a spirited young American woman who inherits a large sum of money and subsequently falls prey to the machinations of individuals trying to gain control of her fortune. The fiercely independent Isabel is set upon fully enjoying her fortune by travelling the European continent. While she had previously rejected two marriage proposals she is taken with an American expatriate, Gilbert Osmond, while visiting Florence, and decides to accept his matrimonial offer. Marital bliss quickly turns to unhappiness when the two settle in Rome and Isabel realizes Gilbert's overwhelming egotism and lack of genuine affection for her. One of James' most enduringly popular works "The Portrait of a Lady" is heralded as a classic of the modern era. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by Charles R. Anderson.
