Confidence By Henry James American/British author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best-known for novels and novellas of morals. As such, he favors internal, psychological drama; his work is frequently about alienation, his prose frequently serpentine. A new edition of a Gothic novella which has inspired many horror and psychological thrillers since its publication. This new edition of The Turn of the Screw offers students the definitive text and extensive appendices. An unnamed young governess is sent to a country house to take charge of two orphans, Miles and Flora. Yet she is soon oppressed by a sense of foreboding and deep disquiet, becoming convinced that something dark is menacing her young charges. But are supernatural forces at work, or is the danger something altogether more earthly? I'm waiting for a telegram--that will settle it. I just walked up to the club to see if it was come--they'll send it there because they suppose this house unoccupied. Not yet, but I shall go back in twenty minutes.""Mercy, how you rush about in this temperature " the poor lady exclaimed while I reflected that it was perhaps HIS billiard-balls I had heard ten minutes before. Georgina's reasons Henry James Henry James's 1884 tale "Georgina's Reasons" presents readers with an insoluble hermeneutic problem regarding its heroine's motivation. This essay applies four interpretative frameworks - theological, political, scientific and geographical - to the question of the heroine's "reasons." Each way of interpreting the story aligns with a genre of nineteenth-century fiction: sensation novel, New Woman novel, naturalism and the international tale. The problem of the heroine's motivation thus provides an occasion for consideration of the stylistic choices available to James in the mid-1880s, and of the capacities and limitations of each style for developing his chosen subject - a woman whose unconventional and destructive behaviour defies rational understanding.
