Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates, with color illustrations
"Important and interesting to the student of history, the adventure-lover, and the artist, as they are, these Pirate stories and pictures have been scattered through many magazines and books. Here, in this volume, they are gathered together for the first time, perhaps not just as Mr. Pyle would have done, but with a completeness and appreciation of the real value of the material which the author's modesty might not have permitted."--Merle Johnson, Foreword, 1921Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates--Fiction, Fact & Fancy concerning the Buccaneers & Marooners of the Spanish Main (1921) is a beautifully illustrated book about pirates and buccaneers of the Spanish Main written by Howard Pyle, with his own 62 illustrations, including 13 color illustrations. It includes The Ghost of Captain Brand, Tom Chist and the Treasure Box, Jack Ballister's Fortunes, The Ruby of Kishmoor, and other tales. Although this is a 100-year-old book, the short stories remain an enjoyable read about the world of pirates.

"The Year 1400 opened with more than usual peacefulness in England. Only a few months before, Richard II--weak, wicked, and treacherous--had been dethroned, and Henry IV declared King in his stead. But it was only a seeming peacefulness, lasting but for a little while; for though King Henry proved himself a just and a merciful man--as justice and mercy went with the men of iron of those day there were many noble families who had been benefited by King Richard during his reign, and who had lost somewhat of their power and prestige from the coming in of the new King." --Howard Pyle, Introduction Men of IronMen of Iron (1892), written and illustrated by Howard Pyle, is a novel set in fifteenth-century England that offers the tale about young Myles Falworth, who wants to avenge his father's honor after he was falsely accused of plotting to kill King Henry IV. In order to restore his family's name, he prepares to become a knight. Written in the style of traditional Arthurian legends, "Otto of the Silver Hand" is a scathing tale of the realities behind the chivalric ideal. During the course of his studies of medieval society, in preparation to write a magnificent series on King Arthur's Court, Howard Pyle shockingly discovered a mentality of cruelty and vengefulness among the legendary knights, which he brings to light in this work. However, these criticisms cannot overshadow the high sense of adventure in the story and illustrations of Otto, the gentle-natured son of a German warlord who, reclaimed from a monastery at age 12, suffers under the hands of a vengeful family rival, Baron Henry. While being held prisoner he falls in love with Baron Henry's daughter, Pauline, until he's rescued by his father and escapes his captor's grasp. The chase ensues in this epic tale of a young man overcoming hatred and strife with goodness and love. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

People admired them for their humane, though illegal, deeds of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Robin Hood had been an outlaw since his eighteenth birthday, during which he won an archery contest. The losing contestants aimed at Robin, but he escaped, killing one of the assailants in the process. Ever since then, the town Sheriff has been chasing Robin. The Sherriff is callous in his search as his cousin was the archer that Robin killed.
