The History and Range Expansion of Peregrine Falcons in the Thule Area, Northwest Greenland

Kurt K. Burnham; William A. Burnham; Ian Newton; Jeff A. Johnson; Andrew G. Gosler

Museum Tusculanum Press
2012
nidottu
This book covers the discovery and history of the most northern breeding population of Peregrine Falcons in the world, near Thule Air Base in north-west Greenland (75.9-77.6° N). Although the region was explored by scientific expeditions as early as 1818, Peregrines were not documented in the area until the 1930s. By the early 1990s the population had become well established, with a warming climate enabling Peregrines from further south to expand their breeding range northward. Here Burnham and his co-authors present their comprehensive findings on the biology and ecology of this population based on thirteen years of research from 1993 to 2005.

A routine flight from the UK to the USA, filled with everyday families, couples, and business travelers. Ordinary people with ordinary lives. But two hours before landing in New York, everything changes. A group of terrorists seizes control of the plane, determined to crash it into Harvard University. The book delves into the backgrounds of the terrorists and a few key passengers, unraveling their stories and motivations. At the heart of the narrative is David, a divorced father of three and a typical family man. He's terrified of spiders and has a paralyzing fear of needles so much so that he'd run a mile at the sight of one. Over the course of the harrowing two-hour ordeal, both passengers and terrorists are pushed to their limits. Courage is tested, alliances shift, and unexpected heroes emerge. Some rise to the occasion, while others falter. Packed with twists, emotional moments, and relentless action, this gripping tale explores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable terror. Editorial Review: This gripping narrative masterfully blends high-stakes action with deeply human moments, creating a story that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling. The author skillfully weaves together the lives of ordinary passengers and the terrorists, offering a nuanced exploration of fear, courage, and resilience. David, the relatable protagonist, anchors the story with his vulnerabilities and quiet strength, making the stakes feel intensely personal. The pacing is relentless, with twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, while the emotional depth ensures the story lingers long after the final page. A compelling read that balances heart-pounding tension with profound insights into the human condition by ( Project Manager Eric Joseph )

The phenomenon of bird migration has fascinated people from time immemorial. The arrivals and departures of different species marked the seasons, heralding spring and autumn, and providing a reliable calendar long before anything better became available. Migration is shown by many kinds of animals, including butterflies and other insects, mammals, marine turtles and fish, but in none is it as extensively developed as in birds. The collective travel routes of birds span almost the entire globe, with some extreme return journeys covering more than 30,000 km. As a result of migration, bird distributions are continually changing - in regular seasonal patterns, and on local, regional or global scales. Migration has repeatedly prompted familiar questions, such as where birds go or come from, why do they do it, how do they know when and where to travel, and how do they find their way? In this seminal new book, Ian Newton sets out to answer these - and other - questions. The book is divided into four main sections: the first is introductory, describing the different types of bird movements, methods of study, and the main migration patterns seen around the British Isles; the second part is concerned mainly with the process of migration - with timing, energy needs, weather effects and navigation; the third with evolution and change in migratory behaviour; and the fourth with the geographical and ecological aspects of bird movements.

Ian Newton, author of Farming and Birds and Bird Migration returns to the New Naturalist series with a long awaited look at the uplands and its birds. The uplands of Britain are unique landscapes created by grazing animals, primarily livestock. The soils and blanket bogs of the uplands are also the largest stores of carbon in the UK, and 70% of the country’s drinking water comes from the uplands. It’s a significant region, not least to the multitudes of bird species that hunt, forage and nest there. Once again, Ian Newton demonstrates his mastery of the subject matter at hand, in this beautifully illustrated, authoritative addition to the New Naturalist series.
Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1822)
Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica is a scientific masterpiece written by Sir Isaac Newton, one of the most influential scientists in history. First published in 1687, this book is a comprehensive study of the laws of motion and the principles of mechanics. It lays the groundwork for modern physics and is considered one of the most important works in the history of science. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the laws of motion and the fundamental principles of mechanics. Newton introduces his famous three laws of motion, which explain how objects move and interact with each other. He also discusses the concept of inertia and the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. The second part of the book focuses on the principles of fluid motion and the behavior of gases. Newton explains the laws governing the motion of fluids and gases, including the principles of buoyancy and viscosity. The third and final part of the book is dedicated to the study of the laws of gravitation. Newton describes how all objects in the universe are attracted to each other and explains the mathematical formula that governs this attraction. Throughout the book, Newton uses mathematical equations and formulas to explain his theories and principles. He also includes numerous examples and experiments to illustrate his ideas. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica is a complex and challenging work, but it is also a fascinating and rewarding read for anyone interested in the history of science and the principles that govern our physical world. This Is A New Release Of The Original 1822 Edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
Bird Populations

Bird Populations

In the latest addition to the New Naturalist series, Ian Newton explores bird populations and what causes their fluctuation – food supplies, competitors, predators, parasites, pathogens and human activity. The combination of a rapidly expanding human population, a predominantly utilitarian attitude to land, central government policy on land use and increasing mechanisation have combined to promote massive changes in land use in recent decades than at any previous comparable period. These developments have in turn brought huge changes in bird habitats and populations; some species dependent on the old landscapes declined, while others have increased. Over the same period, changing public attitudes to wildlife allowed previously scarce bird species to recover from past onslaughts, while climate warming has promoted further changes. In this seminal new work, Ian Newton sets out to explain why different bird species are distributed as they are, and changed over the years in the way that they have. The regular watching and study of birds now provides a source of recreation and pleasure for very large numbers of people, while continued monitoring of bird numbers can also alert us to impending environmental problems. For all of us, a world with fewer birds would be a poorer place.

Dr Newton is now a senior ornithologist with the Natural Environment Research Council and the book draws on his wide knowledge of the Sparrowhawk, as well as that of other workers in Britain and abroad, to give a detailed account of all aspects of its lifestyle, population levels and trends and the impact of man and environment on the species in recent times. The book also has the benefit of Dr Newton's particular interest in population regulation and breeding performance, and in the remarkable contrast in size between the Sparrowhawk sexes (males being half the weight of females), which means that they diverge, almost as separate species, in habitat preference, diet and in response to circumstance. The narrative is fully supported by diagrams, tables and photographs, and is embellished by Keith Brockie's evocative and accomplished drawings.
Population Ecology of Raptors
Dr Newton's book is concerned with all aspects of population regulation in diurnal birds of prey, their social behaviour, dispersion, numbers, movements, breeding and mortality. He has drawn on his own studies in Scotland and on material and investigations worldwide to produce an authoritative and stimulating synthesis of current thinking and research on the ecological problems of the Falconiformes. He also deals in detail with the effects of pesticides and other pollutants on these birds, and with their scientific management and conservation. The author's lucid style will ensure a wide readership among research workers and the more general audience with an interest in birds of prey. There is a full bibliography and an extensive appendix of tables.

The aim of this book is to outline the main methods and techniques available to ornithologists. A general shortage of information about available techniques is greatly hindering progress in avian ecology and conservation. Currently this sort of information is disparate and difficult to locate with much of it widely dispersed in books, journals and grey literature. Sutherland and his editorial team bring together in a single authoritative source all the ornithological techniques the avian community will ever need. For use by graduate students, researchers and practising conservationists worldwide. Bird Ecology and Conservation is the first title in a new series of practical handbooks which include titles focusing on specific taxonomic groups as well as those describing broader themes and subjects. The series editor is William J Sutherland.
