KANSAKUNTAA TARVITAAN -teos puolustaa itsenäisten kansakuntien olemassaoloa ja tarpeellisuutta. Se kuvaa kansalaisuuteen pohjautuvan sosiaalisen ja poliittisen järjestyksen perusteita, jotka vaikuttavat yhä vallankäytön oikeutukseen, sekä pohtii tämän yhteisömuodon eroja muunlaisiin yhteisömuotoihin. Demokraattinen kansakunta toimii tietyllä alueella asuvien ihmisten ylisukupolvisen yhteenkuuluvuuden varassa. Kansakunta perustuu kansalaisuuteen - ei etnisyyteen, rotuun, uskontoon tai sukulaisuuteen. ROGER SCRUTON on toiminut estetiikan professorina Birkbeck Collegessa Lontoossa sekä filosofian professorina Bostonin yliopistossa Massachusettsissa.
