Results and Problems in Combinatorial Geometry

Results and Problems in Combinatorial Geometry

Vladimir G. Boltjansky; Israel Gohberg

Cambridge University Press
1985
pokkari
In this short book, the authors discuss three types of problems from combinatorial geometry: Borsuk's partition problem, covering convex bodies by smaller homothetic bodies, and the illumination problem. They show how closely related these problems are to each other. The presentation is elementary, with no more than high-school mathematics and an interest in geometry required to follow the arguments. Most of the discussion is restricted to two- and three-dimensional Euclidean space, though sometimes more general results and problems are given. Thus even the mathematically unsophisticated reader can grasp some of the results of a branch of twentieth-century mathematics that has applications in such disciplines as mathematical programming, operations research and theoretical computer science. At the end of the book the authors have collected together a set of unsolved and partially solved problems that a sixth-form student should be able to understand and even attempt to solve.

This two-volume work presents a systematic theoretical and computational study of several types of generalizations of separable matrices. The main attention is paid to fast algorithms (many of linear complexity) for matrices in semiseparable, quasiseparable, band and companion form. The work is focused on algorithms of multiplication, inversion and description of eigenstructure and includes a large number of illustrative examples throughout the different chapters. The first volume consists of four parts. The first part is of a mainly theoretical character introducing and studying the quasiseparable and semiseparable representations of matrices and minimal rank completion problems. Three further completions are treated in the second part. The first applications of the quasiseparable and semiseparable structure are included in the third part where the interplay between the quasiseparable structure and discrete time varying linear systems with boundary conditions play an essential role. The fourth part contains factorization and inversion fast algorithms for matrices via quasiseparable and semiseparable structure. The work is based mostly on results obtained by the authors and their coauthors. Due to its many significant applications and the accessible style the text will be useful to engineers, scientists, numerical analysts, computer scientists and mathematicians alike.?

This two-volume work presents a systematic theoretical and computational study of several types of generalizations of separable matrices. The main attention is paid to fast algorithms (many of linear complexity) for matrices in semiseparable, quasiseparable, band and companion form. The work is focused on algorithms of multiplication, inversion and description of eigenstructure and includes a large number of illustrative examples throughout the different chapters. The second volume, consisting of four parts, addresses the eigenvalue problem for matrices with quasiseparable structure and applications to the polynomial root finding problem. In the first part the properties of the characteristic polynomials of principal leading submatrices, the structure of eigenspaces and the basic methods to compute eigenvalues are studied in detail for matrices with quasiseparable representation of the first order. The second part is devoted to the divide and conquer method, with the main algorithms being derived also for matrices with quasiseparable representation of order one. The QR iteration method for some classes of matrices with quasiseparable of any order representations is studied in the third part. This method is then used in the last part in order to get a fast solver for the polynomial root finding problem. The work is based mostly on results obtained by the authors and their coauthors. Due to its many significant applications and the accessible style the text will be useful to engineers, scientists, numerical analysts, computer scientists and mathematicians alike.

After the book "Basic Operator Theory" by Gohberg-Goldberg was pub lished, we, that is the present authors, intended to continue with another book which would show the readers the large variety of classes of operators and the important role they play in applications. The book was planned to be of modest size, but due to the profusion of results in this area of analysis, the number of topics grew larger than ex pected. Consequently, we decided to divide the material into two volumes - the first volume being presented now. During the past years, courses and seminars were given at our respective in stitutions based on parts of the texts. These were well received by the audience and enabled us to make appropriate choices for the topics and presentation for the two vol umes. We would like to thank G. J. Groenewald, A. B. Kuijper and A. C. M. Ran of the Vrije Universiteit at Amsterdam, who provided us with lists of remarks and corrections. We are now aware that the Basic Operator Theory book should be revised so that it may suitably fit in with our present volumes. This revision is planned to be the last step of an induction and not the first.

These two volumes constitute texts for graduate courses in linear operator theory. The reader is assumed to have a knowledge of both complex analysis and the first elements of operator theory. The texts are intended to concisely present a variety of classes of linear operators, each with its own character, theory, techniques and tools. For each of the classes, various differential and integral operators motivate or illustrate the main results. Although each class is treated seperately and the first impression may be that of many different theories, interconnections appear frequently and unexpectedly. The result is a beautiful, unified and powerful theory. The classes we have chosen are representatives of the principal important classes of operators, and we believe that these illustrate the richness of operator theory, both in its theoretical developments and in its applicants. Because we wanted the books to be of reasonable size, we were selective in the classes we chose and restricted our attention to the main features of the corresponding theories. However, these theories have been updated and enhanced by new developments, many of which appear here for the first time in an operator-theory text. In the selection of the material the taste and interest of the authors played an important role.

The authors initially planned to write an article describing the origins and devel opments of the theory of Fredholm operators and to present their recollections of this topic. We started to read again classical papers and we were sidetracked by the literature concerned with the theory and applications of traces and determi nants of infinite matrices and integral operators. We were especially impressed by the papers of Poincare, von Koch, Fredholm, Hilbert and Carleman, as well as F. Riesz's book on infinite systems of linear equations. Consequently our plans were changed and we decided to write a paper on the history of determinants of infi nite matrices and operators. During the preparation of our paper we realized that many mathematical questions had to be answered in order to gain a more com plete understanding of the subject. So, we changed our plans again and decided to present the subject in a more advanced form which would satisfy our new require ments. This whole process took between four and five years of challenging, but enjoyable work. This entailed the study of the appropriate relatively recent results of Grothendieck, Ruston, Pietsch, Hermann Konig and others. After the papers [GGK1] and [GGK2] were published, we saw that the written material could serve as the basis of a book.

In this book we study orthogonal polynomials and their generalizations in spaces with weighted inner products. The impetus for our research was a deep theorem due to M. G. Krein along with subsequent results of Krein and H. Langer. Together with our colleagues, we have worked in this area for nearly fifteen years, and the results of our research are presented here in unified form. We are grateful to the Department of mathematics at the University of Maryland in College Park and to Tel-Aviv University for their support and encouragement. The support of the Silver Family Foundation is also highly appreciated. Introduction The starting point ofthis book is a study ofthe orthogonal polynomials {qn In ?: O} obtained by orthogonalizing the power functions I, Z, z2, ... on the unit circle. The orthogonality is with respect to the scalar product defined by where the weight w is a positive integrable function on the unit circle. These ortho gonal polynomials are called the Szego polynomials associated with the weight w.
Partially Specified Matrices and Operators: Classification, Completion, Applications

Partially Specified Matrices and Operators: Classification, Completion, Applications

Springer Basel

This book is devoted to a new direction in linear algebra and operator theory that deals with the invariants of partially specified matrices and operators, and with the spectral analysis of their completions. The theory developed centers around two major problems concerning matrices of which part of the entries are given and the others are unspecified. The first is a classification problem and aims at a simplification of the given part with the help of admissible similarities. The results here may be seen as a far reaching generalization of the Jordan canonical form. The second problem is called the eigenvalue completion problem and asks to describe all possible eigenvalues and their multiplicities of the matrices which one obtains by filling in the unspecified entries. Both problems are also considered in an infinite dimensional operator framework. A large part of the book deals with applications to matrix theory and analysis, namely to stabilization problems in mathematical system theory, to problems of Wiener-Hopf factorization and interpolation for matrix polynomials and rational matrix functions, to the Kronecker structure theory of linear pencils, and to non everywhere defined operators. The eigenvalue completion problem has a natural associated inverse, which appears as a restriction problem. The analysis of these two problems is often simpler when a solution of the corresponding classification problem is available.

The present book deals with canonical factorization problems for di?erent classes of matrix and operator functions. Such problems appear in various areas of ma- ematics and its applications. The functions we consider havein common that they appear in the state space form or can be represented in such a form. The main results are all expressed in terms of the matrices or operators appearing in the state space representation. This includes necessary and su?cient conditions for canonical factorizations to exist and explicit formulas for the corresponding f- tors. Also, in the applications the entries in the state space representation play a crucial role. Thetheorydevelopedinthebookisbasedonageometricapproachwhichhas its origins in di?erent ?elds. One of the initial steps can be found in mathematical systems theory and electrical network theory, where a cascade decomposition of an input-output system or a network is related to a factorization of the associated transfer function. Canonical factorization has a long and interesting history which starts in the theory of convolution equations. Solving Wiener-Hopf integral equations is closely related to canonical factorization. The problem of canonical factorization also appears in other branches of applied analysis and in mathematical systems theory, in H -control theory in particular.

This is a book on holomorphic operator functions of a single variable and their - plications, whichisfocussedontherelationsbetweenlocalandglobaltheories. Itis based on methods and technics of Complex analysis of scalar and matrix functions of several variables. The applications concern: interpolation, holomorphic families of subspaces and frames, spectral theory of polynomials with operator coe?cients, holomorphic equivalence and diagonalization, and Plemelj-Muschelishvili fact- ization. The book also contains a theory of Wiener-Hopf integral equations with operator-valued kernels and a theory of in?nite Toplitz .. matrices with operator entries. We started to work on these topics long ago when one of us was a Ph. D. s- dent of the other in Kishinev (now Cisinau) University. Then our main interests were in problems of factorization of operator-valued functions and singular in- gral operators. Working in this area, we realized from the beginning that di?erent methods and tools from Complex analysis of several variables and their modi?- tions are very useful in obtaining results on factorization for matrix and operator functions. We have in mind di?erent methods and results concerning connections between local and global properties of holomorphic functions. The ?rst period was very fruitful and during it we obtained the basic results presented in this book.

Thepresentbookdealswithvarioustypesoffactorizationproblemsformatrixand operator functions. The problems appear in di?erent areasof mathematics and its applications. A uni?ed approach to treat them is developed. The main theorems yield explicit necessaryand su?cient conditions for the factorizations to exist and explicit formulas for the corresponding factors. Stability of the factors relative to a small perturbation of the original function is also studied in this book. The unifying theory developed in the book is based on a geometric approach which has its origins in di?erent ?elds. A number of initial steps can be found in: (1) the theory of non-selfadjoint operators, where the study of invariant s- spaces of an operator is related to factorization of the characteristic matrix or operator function of the operator involved, (2) mathematical systems theory and electrical network theory, where a cascade decomposition of an input-output system or a network is related to a fact- ization of the associated transfer function, and (3) thefactorizationtheoryofmatrixpolynomialsintermsofinvariantsubspaces of a corresponding linearization. In all three cases a state space representation of the function to be factored is used, and the factors are expressed in state space form too. We call this approach the state space method. It hasa largenumber of applications. For instance, besides the areasreferred to above, Wiener-Hopf factorizations of some classes of symbols can also be treated by the state space method.

This book covers recent results in linear algebra with indefinite inner product. It includes applications to differential and difference equations with symmetries, matrix polynomials and Riccati equations. These applications are based on linear algebra in spaces with indefinite inner product. The latter forms an independent branch of linear algebra called indefinite linear algebra. This new subject is presented following the principles of a standard linear algebra course.

The present book is an expanded and enriched version ofthe textBasicOperator Theory, written by the first two authors more than twenty years ago. Since then the three ofus have used the basic operator theory text in various courses. This experience motivated us to update and improve the old text by including a wider variety ofbasic classes ofoperators and their applications. The present book has also been written in such a way that it can serve as an introduction to our previous booksClassesofLinearOperators, Volumes I and II. We view the three books as a unit. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the mathematical departments of Tel-Aviv University, the University of Maryland at College Park, and the Vrije Universiteit atAmsterdam. The generous support ofthe Silver Family Foundation is highly appreciated. Amsterdam, November 2002 The authors Introduction This elementary text is an introduction to functional analysis, with a strong emphasis on operator theory and its applications. It is designed for graduate and senior undergraduate students in mathematics, science, engineering, and other fields.

The main concern of this book is the distribution of zeros of polynomials that are orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to an indefinite weighted scalar or inner product. The first theorem of this type, proved by M. G. Krein, was a far-reaching generalization of G. Szego's result for the positive definite case. A continuous analogue of that theorem was proved by Krein and H. Langer. These results, as well as many generalizations and extensions, are thoroughly treated in this book. A unifying theme is the general problem of orthogonalization with invertible squares in modules over C*-algebras. Particular modules that are considered in detail include modules of matrices, matrix polynomials, matrix-valued functions, linear operators, and others. One of the central features of this book is the interplay between orthogonal polynomials and their generalizations on the one hand, and operator theory, especially the theory of Toeplitz marices and operators, and Fredholm and Wiener-Hopf operators, on the other hand. The book is of interest to both engineers and specialists in analysis.

rii application of linear operators on a Hilbert space. We begin with a chapter on the geometry of Hilbert space and then proceed to the spectral theory of compact self adjoint operators; operational calculus is next presented as a nat ural outgrowth of the spectral theory. The second part of the text concentrates on Banach spaces and linear operators acting on these spaces. It includes, for example, the three 'basic principles of linear analysis and the Riesz Fredholm theory of compact operators. Both parts contain plenty of applications. All chapters deal exclusively with linear problems, except for the last chapter which is an introduction to the theory of nonlinear operators. In addition to the standard topics in functional anal ysis, we have presented relatively recent results which appear, for example, in Chapter VII. In general, in writ ing this book, the authors were strongly influenced by re cent developments in operator theory which affected the choice of topics, proofs and exercises. One of the main features of this book is the large number of new exercises chosen to expand the reader's com prehension of the material, and to train him or her in the use of it. In the beginning portion of the book we offer a large selection of computational exercises; later, the proportion of exercises dealing with theoretical questions increases. We have, however, omitted exercises after Chap ters V, VII and XII due to the specialized nature of the subject matter.

This monograph combines the commutant lifting theorem for operator theory and the state space method from system theory to provide a unified approach for solving both stationary and nonstationary interpolation problems with norm constraints. Included are the operator-valued versions of tangential Nevanlinna-Pick problem, the Hermite-Fejer problem, the Nehari problem, the Sarason problem, and the two-sided Nudelman problem, adn their nonstationary analogues. The main results concern the existance of solutions, the explicit construction of the central solutions in state space form, the maximum entropy property of the central solutions, and state space parametrizations of all solutions. Direct connections between the various interpolations problems are displayed. Application to the H-infinity control problems are presented. This monograph should appeal to a wide group of mathematicians and engineers. The material is self-contained and may be used for advanced graduate courses and seminars.
