The technological evolution, and especially of social media, has come with tremendous advantages for the citizens: internet connections, access to infinite information at practically no costs, possibilities of connecting and finding people we never knew but which have common problems and common aspirations or beliefs. At the same time, even though we begin to use extensively technology and social media at the very early ages, nobody undertook the needed social and psychological studies linked with the consequences of this tremendous evolution. Those evolutions are coming with a lot of added values for our day by day life, but also with shortcomings or at least changes in our preferences, behavior and choices. They made the world look differently in a matter of some years, and that created difficulties for the institutions, for the leadership as well as for the politicians to adapt. They promote charismatic leaders and those with extreme ideas, that made visibility and popularity and discharged the serious experts and political figures that were much less appealing for the mass followers. It shifted the public space and common knowledge, reality and facts and our day by day life.

This book seeks to critically review and evaluate the changes and consistencies in how warfare is interpreted and represented by academics, mass media outlets and political actors in the 21st century. The authors suggest that it is essential to understand the evolution and transformation of contemporary warfare's conceptualisation and practice in order to make sense of the current global geopolitical transformations that are in process, from a unipolar to multipolar global order. They therefore examine the various key actors in international relations from conceptual, theoretical and empirical perspectives through thematic chapters that demonstrate the increasingly central role played by intangible factors in the representation and management of contemporary armed conflict. The book stresses the need to reflect and rethink the potentially highly problematic trajectory of the global community within the framework of 21st century warfare's political and informational influence and effects.

This study discusses salient trends demonstrated by contemporary warfare of these first years of the 21st century. The authors reinforce previous notions of Fourth Generation Warfare, but most importantly explore the workings of new components and how these have modified the theory and practice of warfare beyond the basic divisions of conventional and unconventional warfare as witnessed in the preceding century. Throughout history there has been a close interaction between politics, communication and armed conflict and a main line of investigation of this book is to track changes that are presumed to have occurred in the way and manner in which armed conflicts are waged. Using cogent examples drawn variously from conflicts of the Arab Spring, the Islamic State and Russian adventurism in South Ossetia, Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, the authors demonstrate the application of Information Warfare, the practice of Hybrid Warfare, and offensive use of diplomacy, communications, economics and international law to obtain political and military advantages against the status quo states of the international community. The authors combine a theoretical framework with concrete empirical examples in order to create a better understanding and comprehension of the current events and processes that shape the character of contemporary armed conflicts and how they are informed and perceived in a highly mediatised and politicised world.
