French novelist Charles Marie George Huysmans adopted the pseudonym Joris-Karl, or J. K. Huysmans, for his novels, short stories and art criticism. His thirty-year tenure at the French Ministry of the Interior allowed him the financial and personal freedom to write as he pleased. In the same vein as his mentor, mile Zola, Huysmans' writings were largely naturalistic. Huysmans' novels were somewhat controversial at the time of publication, as they often dealt with themes of religion, social and political commentary, and in the case of his 1891 novel, "The Damned", Satanism. "The Damned", is the first of a series of novels in which Huysmans' explores his own personal struggle with religious faith through his characters, in this case the main character, Durtal. The novel explores religious and philosophical extremes, and depicts Satanism in the late 1880s through the eyes of Durtal, who is seeking respite from what he sees as a disgusting and vulgar modern world. The Crowds of Lourdes, first published in 1906, was J.-K. Huysmans last book, and certainly his greatest work of non-fiction. Written in a style that is at once precise and brutal, this Naturalist study of the pilgrim-crowds of Lourdes, presented as a series of closely connected vignettes full of highly coloured description, is sometimes somber, sometimes scathing, and often touching. In these pages the reader will find a whole-hearted tribute to Our Lady of Lourdes--but one that is a far from conventional, and the penetrating analysis of the author, who offers here some of his finest passages, is full of a fervent emotion and tenderness that is not the least at odds with his fiery spirituality.
Originally published in French under the title " Rebours" in 1884 and translated into English in 1926, "Against Nature", also known as "Against the Grain", is a book by Joris-Karl Huysmans and is well described by its subtitle "A Novel Without a Plot". The premise of the novel is simple and follows the seclusion of Jean des Esseintes, the last member of a once powerful and noble family. Having lived an extremely decadent life in 19th-century bourgeois Parisian society, Des Esseintes finds himself disgusted with the life he once led and retreats to a house in the countryside. He is intent upon spending the rest of his days in an artistic world of his own making, with his days full of intellectual and aesthetic contemplation. During his many and varied artistic and philosophical experiments, he recalls in detail the debauchery and passion of his Paris days. Due to its decadent content, "Against Nature" created quite a sensation when it was first published. It met with great commercial success however, and in breaking from the Naturalist school of literature, Huysman's work established itself as an important and influential novel of the Symbolist aesthetic.
