International Organizations (IOs) are vital institutions in world politics in which cross-border issues can be discussed and global problems managed. This path-breaking book shows the efforts that small states have made to participate more fully in IO activities. It draws attention to the challenges created by widened participation in IOs and develops an original model of the dilemmas that both IOs and small states face as the norms of sovereign equality and the right to develop coincide. Drawing on extensive qualitative data, including more than 80 interviews conducted for this book, the authors find that the strategies which both IOs and small states adopt to balance their respective dilemmas can explain both continuity and change in their interactions with institutions ranging from UN agencies to the World Trade Organization.

Memory and Institutional Amnesia in Government examines the way in which government suffers from institutional amnesia, meaning that it cannot hold or use memory of the past. Consequently, a great deal of important knowledge is erased and those who work in government find themselves repeating the mistakes of the past. The book explores these issues through a comparison of the public services of Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom in which the authors establish the causes of institutional amnesia, analyze its effects, and recommend a series of treatments that might remedy the problems that it causes.

The viability of small island developing states (SIDS) is threatened by three distinct processes – a backlash against globalisation; rising geopolitical competition between powers; and accelerating climate change – which are pulling at the threads binding the liberal international order together. We suggest that this order has been kinder to SIDS than is often acknowledged because its underpinning norms – sovereign equality, non-interference, and right to development – are inherently permissive and thus provide SIDS with choices rather than imperatives. Their leaders should fight for the continuation and enhancement of that order rather than be seduced by alternatives. We provide a rationale for and examples of policies to achieve this, including reforms to the way ODA is measured, debt restructured, climate finance allocated, and global governance organised. These enhancements represent the most plausible pathway for SIDS in a period of significant global upheaval. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Statehood à la Carte in the Caribbean and the Pacific
This book explains how leaders in the Caribbean and Pacific regions balance the autonomy-viability dilemma of postcolonial statehood - that political self-determination is a hollow achievement unless it is accompanied by economic development - by practising statehood à la carte. Previous research has focused on the pursuit of decolonial self-determination through and above the nation state, via regionalism and internationalism, or by creating non-sovereign alternatives to it. This book looks at how communities have sought the same goals below the state, including via secession and devolution. Downsizing is typically portrayed as the antithesis of progressive, cosmopolitan internationalism and employed as evidence for the claim that the age of anticolonial self-determination has ended. In this book, Jack Corbett shows how these movements are animated by similar ideas and motivations that are rendered viable by the simultaneous pursuit of regional integration and forms of non-sovereignty. He argues that the à la carte pursuit of political and economic independence through, above, and below the state, and via non-sovereign alternatives to it, is a pragmatic response to the contradictions inherent to coloniality.

Before Facebook and smart phones film was king. In 1996 professional photographers laughed at the cheap digital camera I started bringing into strip clubs. Five years later they weren't laughing anymore. This was the time to create magic. And thanks to so many topless club owner friends of mine, adult magazines I wrote for such as "Xtreme Magazine", top feature talent agencies such as Pure Talent, and so many adult entertainer friends of mine, we created a lot of magic. Which we will probably never see the likes of again. On my alphapro.com web site I claim to be the first to bring digital photography into strip clubs. Well, maybe someone else did, but I sure haven't heard about him. While I had a local club provide me with my own phone line to access the internet, free drinks on the house, and my own table just five feet from the club's main stage. We (my dancer and club manager friends and I) could shoot all the pictures we wanted from my digital camera, put them on my laptop and broadcast them all over the world through our Lost Angels chat. No one else was doing it. Those guys shooting film just didn't get it. While the dancers I knew did and my manager and owner friends running the clubs were very quick at grasping what this new technology could do for them. Those were incredible times back then. Which in the new world of post Covid 19, Facebook and the Smart Phone we are likely to never see again. Contributor Notes (986 / 2500) Jack Corbett wrote his first novel, "Death on the Wild Side" about the wild adult entertainment scene in the St. Louis Metro East where he spent a lot of time in the topless clubs preparing his material. Soon after its publication he started up his alphapro web site and took the plunge into digital photography while when it was in its infancy. He then started writing for adult magazines while branching out into professional photography to augment his articles. He is perhaps best known for his Xtreme Weapons articles for Xtreme Magazine, his coverage of major adult entertainment events, and his interviews of famous feature entertainers. By the time he bought his beach front condo in Thailand, he had written over 100 articles for four adult magazines while shooting over 100,000 pictures of adult entertainers and key adult industry events. His experiences on his condo committee while dealing with a Second World culture provided the inspiration for "Welcome to the Fun House".

"Extreme Guns and Babes for an Adult Worl" started out as a series of gun articles published in "Xtreme Magazine" showcasing the beauty of 26 adult entertainers, including Miss Nude World, Miss Nude Illinois and M. S. Texas. What distinguishes it from any other book about guns is it had to appeal to a readership that had no particular interest in guns. While still providing incisive firearms content that would capture the attention of serious hunters, gun collectors, and firearms enthusiasts. The "Xtreme Magazine" guns and babes articles led to the 2004 Xtreme Weapons calendar that was financed by the Jack Corbett, Xtreme Magazine's editor, Jeremy McTeague, and Vic Meyer, a Missouri gun dealer who specialized in military weapons. Because Vic intended to sell the calendar at gun shows to thousands of gun fanatics the entire project had to have a very serious focus on weapons. While still providing spectacular photos and commentary of the models that "Xtreme Magazine" could sell to customers whose primary interest was in adult entertainment. The Xtreme Magazine Guns and Babes articles and the 2004 Xtreme Weapons Calendar led to Jack Corbett's writing and producing "Extreme Guns and Babes for an Adult World" which he originally published in two paperback editions, one in full color, the other in a much more affordable black white edition. While both editions included 119 pictures of his guns and models, Jack decided to create a larger and even more spectacular hardcover book for book stores such as Barnes and Noble. This is the L 5th hardcover edition printed at lulu.com.

The L hardback edition of "Life of an Exotic Entertainment Photographer" is for the discriminating reader who will be satisfied with nothing less than the best. There are 69 full color pictures in the L version. Which showcases the author's adult photography that the smaller paperback editions cannot match. This is the one to buy to show off on your coffee table or bookshelf. But whatever edition of "Life of an Exotic Entertainment Photographer" you choose, you are buying the only book of its kind. Destined to be a classic, "Life of an Exotic Entertainment Photographer" presents a unique view of adult entertainment industry that can only be seen through the eyes of a professional adult photographer. But what makes the "Life of an Exotic Entertainment Photographer" a true classic is its author was the first to introduce digital photography to strip clubs. While unlike other professional photographers doing their photoshoots next to him, Jack was writing for four adult magazines. Which enabled him to cover major adult industry events such as Nudes-A-Poppin and Miss Nude World on two levels; as a photographer and as a writer. The "Life of an Exotic Entertainment Photographer" takes the reader into an entirely different dimension of the strip club experience. Instead of the seedy side of the adult entertainment industry the author presents an entirely different view of this multi billion dollar industry. Like no other book before, "Life of an Exotic Entertainment Photographer" presents a world of incredibly talented people who share a vision of bringing a sense of beauty, excitement, and off the wall sense of humor that one rarely finds outside the adult entertainment arena. Whether they are showgirls, night club owners and managers, adult magazine owners or adult photographers, Jack presents a much maligned and misunderstood group of mavericks devoting themselves to the pursuit of excellence.

Institutional Memory as Storytelling

Institutional Memory as Storytelling

How do bureaucracies remember? The conventional view is that institutional memory is static and singular, the sum of recorded files and learned procedures. There is a growing body of scholarship that suggests contemporary bureaucracies are failing at this core task. This Element argues that this diagnosis misses that memories are essentially dynamic stories. They reside with people and are thus dispersed across the array of actors that make up the differentiated polity. Drawing on four policy examples from four sectors (housing, energy, family violence and justice) in three countries (the UK, Australia and New Zealand), this Element argues that treating the way institutions remember as storytelling is both empirically salient and normatively desirable. It is concluded that the current conceptualisation of institutional memory needs to be recalibrated to fit the types of policy learning practices required by modern collaborative governance.

Is it possible to compare French presidential politics with village leadership in rural India? Most social scientists are united in thinking such unlikely juxtapositions are not feasible. Boswell, Corbett and Rhodes argue that they are possible. This book explains why and how. It is a call to arms for interpretivists to embrace creatively comparative work. As well as explaining, defending and illustrating the comparative interpretive approach, this book is also an engaging, hands-on guide to doing comparative interpretive research, with chapters covering design, fieldwork, analysis and writing. The advice in each revolves around 'rules of thumb', grounded in experience, and illustrated through stories and examples from the authors' research in different contexts around the world. Naturalist and humanist traditions have thus far dominated the field but this book presents a real alternative to these two orthodoxies which expands the horizons of comparative analysis in social science research.

Australia's Foreign Aid Dilemma

Australia's Foreign Aid Dilemma

The Australian aid program faces a fundamental dilemma: how, in the absence of deep popular support, should it generate the political legitimacy required to safeguard its budget and administering institution? Australia’s Foreign Aid Dilemma tells the story of the actors who have grappled with this question over 40 years. It draws on extensive interviews and archival material to uncover how 'court politics' shapes both aid policy and administration. The lesson for scholars and practitioners is that any holistic understanding of the development enterprise must account for the complex relationship between the aid program of individual governments and the domestic political and bureaucratic contexts in which it is embedded. If the way funding is administered shapes development outcomes, then understanding the 'court politics' of aid matters. This comprehensive text will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of politics and foreign policy as well as development professionals in Australia and across the world.

Populism and the personalization of politics appears to be threatening the existence of democracy as we know it all over the world. It is now more important than ever to understand the history of this form of regime: why it has thrives and fails. But, existing studies are limited by their focus on a few large and predominately rich states. This book takes the opposite approach: it investigates how politics is practiced in the smallest states where hyper-personalization has always been a ubiquitous feature of political life. It optimistically finds that hyper-personalized democracy can actually persist against all odds, but also cautions that political practices in small states are often markedly different to larger states. Oxford Studies in Democratization is a series for scholars and students of comparative politics and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on the comparative study of the democratization process that accompanied the decline and termination of the cold war. The geographical focus of the series is primarily Latin America, the Caribbean, Southern and Eastern Europe, and relevant experiences in Africa and Asia. The series editor is Laurence Whitehead, Senior Research Fellow, Nuffield College, University of Oxford.

Being Political

Being Political

Jack Corbett

University of Hawai'i Press

Politicians everywhere tend to attract cynicism and inspire disillusionment. They are supposed to epitomize the promise of democratic government and yet invariably find themselves cast as the enemy of every virtue that system seeks to uphold. In the Pacific, “politician” has become a byword for corruption, graft, and misconduct. This was not always the case—the independence generation is still remembered as strong leaders—but today’s leaders are commonly associated with malaise and despair. Once heroes of self-determination, politicians are now the targets of donor attempts to institute “good governance,” while Fiji’s 2006 coup was partly justified on the grounds that they needed “cleaning up.” But who are these much-maligned figures? How did theycome to arrive in politics? What is it like to be a politician? Why do they enter, stay, and leave? Drawing on more than 110 interviews and other published sources, including autobiographies and biographies, Being Political provides a collective portrait ofthe region’s political elite. This is an insider account of political life in the Pacific as seen through the eyes of those who have done the job. Corbett shows that politics is a messy, unpredictable, and, at times, dirty business that nonetheless inspires service and sacrifice. Being a politician has changed since independence, but politics continues to be deeply imbedded in the lives of individuals, families, and communities; an account that belies the common characterization of democracy in the Pacific as a “façade” or“foreign flower.” Ultimately, this is a sympathetic counter-narrative to the populist critique. We come to know politicians as people with hopes and fears, pains and pleasures, vices and virtues. As such, this book is a must-read for all those who believe in the promise of representative government.
Extreme Guns and Babes for an Adult World: Black and white Edition
Borrowing a white tiger just to take the best pictures of a topless dancer posing with a German World War II Mauser might seem to be a little extreme for getting the reader's attention until you consider that author photographer Jack Corbett and his friends turned the White Tiger loose in a topless club afterwards. But "Extreme Guns and Babes for an Adult World" is not your average run of the mill book about guns. It is a collection of 26 articles the writer-photographer produced while writing for "Xtreme Magazine". This third edition of the book is printed in black and white whereas the 2nd edition is in full color and the first edition was published in Kindle. Each edition contains over 100 photos. There's over 26 models posing with the 26 weapons (or the Tiger), and all of them are feature entertainers and strippers. Jack Corbett's mission was one nearly every red blooded American male would envy which was he got to select his own models for his articles while getting to write about any gun he chose. And since Xtreme Magazine is a small East Coast adult magazine there was no bureaucracy to put up with. There's a lot of good stuff about guns here for all of you gun lovers out there. For instance, did you know why the Colt Python was the best .357 magnum revolver on the market or why Vietnam era M-16's are better man stoppers than the "improved models" being used today? Or why the underpowered, inaccurate (according to its detractors) M-1 carbine was the favorite weapon of Audie Murphy, America's most decorated World War II hero or how the German M42 machine gun outclassed the 30 caliber Browning used by American World War II soldiers? The book is labeled "adult" but this might be a misnomer. If you are looking for porn you will not find it here. If you are looking for complete nudity, there's been a coverup, as even though a large number of the pictures appearing in this book were shot in the nude, bare nipples and the most private portions of the models have disappeared into the dark recesses of Photoshop.
