The Penguin Classics Marvel Collection presents the origin stories, seminal tales, and characters of the Marvel Universe to explore Marvel's transformative and timeless influence on an entire genre of fantasy. A Penguin Classics Marvel Collection EditionIt is impossible to imagine American popular culture without Marvel Comics. For decades, Marvel has published groundbreaking visual narratives that sustain attention on multiple levels: as metaphors for the experience of difference and otherness; as meditations on the fluid nature of identity; and as high-water marks in the artistic tradition of American cartooning, to name a few. Drawing upon multiple comic book series, this collection includes Captain America's very first appearances from 1941 alongside key examples of his first solo stories of the 1960s, in which Steve Rogers, the newly resurrected hero of World War II, searches to find his place in a new and unfamiliar world. As the contents reveal, the transformations of this American icon thus mark parallel transformations in the nation itself. A foreword by Gene Luen Yang and scholarly introductions and apparatus by Ben Saunders offer further insight into the enduring significance of Captain America and classic Marvel comics. The Deluxe Hardcover edition features gold foil stamping, gold top stain edges, special endpapers with artwork spotlighting series villains, and full-colour art throughout.

In cooperation with DC Comics, TwoMorrows compiles a tempestuous trio of never-seen 1970s Kirby projects! These are the final complete, unpublished Jack Kirby stories in existence, presented here for the first time! Included are: Two unused Dingbats of Danger Street tales (Kirby’s final Kid Gang group, inked by Mike Royer and D. Bruce Berry, and newly colored for this book)! True-Life Divorce, the abandoned newsstand magazine that was too hot for its time (reproduced from Jack’s pencil art—and as a bonus, we’ve commissioned Mike Royer to ink one of the stories)! And Soul Love, the unseen ’70s romance book so funky, even a jive turkey will dig the unretouched inks by Vince Colletta and Tony DeZuniga. PLUS: There’s Kirby historian John Morrow’s in-depth examination of why these projects got left back, concept art and uninked pencils from Dingbats, and a Foreword by ’70s Kirby assistant Mark Evanier!

In 1971, following his move from Marvel Comics to DC, writer/artist Jack Kirby unleashed the Fourth World comics -- four interconnected series. The centrepiece of these titles was NEW GODS, which introduced the warring worlds of Apokolips, ruled by the dread Darkseid, and New Genesis, led by the philosophical Highfather. A sprawling cast of characters was led by Orion, son of Darkseid, raised on New Genesis as a savage warrior on a world of peace. And while Darkseid scoured the Earth in search of the deadly Anti-Life Equation, Orion battled his minions Kalibak, Canto and others, with the help of his New Genesis allies Lightray, Metron and others. Collects NEW GODS #1-11, plus the 48-page story Even Gods Must Die, written and illustrated by Kirby in 1984, and the original 1985 graphic novel by Kirby, THE HUNGER DOGS, which was designed to be a bookend to the entire Fourth World epic.

The military wants to strip him apart, mankind doesn't understand him - but in exploits crafted by two of the medium's greatest talents, he'll still redefine humanity.
