A triangle romance provides the basis for a questioning of the meaning of masculinity, as well as an examination of agribusiness in California. Jack London said of this novel: "It is all sex from start to finish -- in which no sexual adventure is actually achieved or comes within a million miles of being achieved, and in which, nevertheless, is all the guts of sex, coupled with strength."

It was the end. Subienkow had travelled a long trail of bitterness and horror, homing like a dove for the capitals of Europe, and here, farther away than ever, in Russian America, the trail ceased. He sat in the snow, arms tied behind him, waiting the torture. He stared curiously before him at a huge Cossack, prone in the snow, moaning in his pain. The men had finished handling the giant and turned him over to the women. That they exceeded the fiendishness of the men, the man's cries attested.

His grandsons are "savage" and live as primeval hunter-gatherers in a heavily depopulated world. Their intellect is limited, as are their language abilities. A framing story is told in the first person by Darrell Standing, a university professor serving life imprisonment in San Quentin State Prison for murder. Prison officials try to break his spirit by means of a torture device called "the jacket," a canvas jacket which can be tightly laced so as to compress the whole body, inducing angina. Standing discovers how to withstand the torture by entering a kind of trance state, in which he walks among the stars and experiences portions of past lives. I trod interstellar space, exalted by the knowledge that I was bound on vast adventure, where, at the end, I would find all the cosmic formulae and have made clear to me the ultimate secret of the universe. In my hand I carried a long glass wand. It was borne in upon me that with the tip of this wand I must touch each star in passing. And I knew, in all absoluteness, that did I but miss one star I should be precipitated into some unplummeted abyss of unthinkable and eternal punishment and guilt.

John Claverhouse was a moon-faced man. You know the kind, cheek-bones wide apart, chin and forehead melting into the cheeks to complete the perfect round, and the nose, broad and pudgy, equidistant from the circumference, flattened against the very centre of the face like a dough-ball upon the ceiling. Perhaps that is why I hated him, for truly he had become an offense to my eyes, and I believed the earth to be cumbered with his presence. Perhaps my mother may have been superstitious of the moon and looked upon it over the wrong shoulder at the wrong time.

Jack London's novels and rugged individualism embodied American hopes, frustrations, and romantic longings in the turbulent early years of the twentieth century, an era infused with the wonder and excitement of great technological and historic change. The author's restless spirit, taste for excitement, and probing mind led him on a series of hard-edged adventures from the Yukon to the South Seas. Out of these sometimes harrowing experiences -- and his fascination with the theories of such thinkers as Darwin, Spencer, and Marx -- came the inspiration for adventure novels that made him one of America's most popular writers. The Call of the Wild, widely considered London's greatest novel, is a gripping tale of a heroic dog thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush and forced to choose between civilization and nature. London's urgent and vivid style, intensified by his firsthand experiences of Klondike life, makes this tale as fresh and immediate today as it was upon its 1903 publication. This splendid hardcover edition features extensive illustrations by wildlife specialist Paul Bransom; in addition to 16 full-color plates, numerous color and black-and-white images include headpieces, spot pieces, and other rich embellishments.

"A genuine quest for the myths of the unconscious. A work of] true power." -- Andrew Sinclair. An inmate sentenced to life at San Quentin escapes the horrors of his incarceration through astral travel in this boldly imaginative work by a master storyteller. Darrell Standing endures the agonies of beatings and extended periods in a straitjacket by withdrawing into intense dreams of his past lives. Standing's fantasies transport him from his harrowing confinement to identities as a nobleman in medieval France, a shipwrecked seal-hunter, an Englishman in 17th-century Korea, and an advisor to Pontius Pilate. This final novel by the author of The Call of the Wild is both a tale of life in solitary confinement and an epic journey across space, time, and history. Jack London delivers a moving indictment of the brutality and corruption of the prison system that is also a celebration of the power of imagination to rise above misery and to keep hope alive.

Jack London's merciless take on the survival of the fittest as set in the Alaskan wilderness during the Klondike Gold Rush was enthusiastically received in a time when Western society was eagerly interpreting the world through Darwinian eyes. The story became an instant classic, and insofar as humanity continues to wrestle with the implications of a naturalistic outlook on human affairs, "The Call of the Wild" remains relevant with its stark portrayal of nature, red in tooth and claw.
