This volume offers valuable insights into English-medium instruction (EMI) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the educational context of Hong Kong universities. The book opens with an overview of EMI in Hong Kong universities. With the focus on a local public university, it then presents a comprehensive analysis of EMI in STEM, covering a range of topics such as educational policies, students' English learning needs, curriculum materials, and student writing in STEM. Next, it outlines the potential benefits and challenges of generative AI, and shares sample pedagogical activities. The volume concludes by discussing future research directions that connect EMI and STEM scholarship. This book will appeal to academics and students in EMI, applied linguistics, and second language teaching, in particular those working within STEM education.

This book explores issues of teaching science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through the medium of English in the context of higher education in Hong Kong. It analyses policy issues and language challenges faced by university students and pedagogical strategies for the professional development of English-Medium of Instruction (EMI) teachers. Hong Kong as a focus case is valuable because nearly 60% of government-funded university programmes are STEM or science-related, while over 90% of the student population speaks Chinese as a first language but also speak and write English due to local language policies and Hong Kong’s colonial history, making it a useful site for EMI research. By providing an evidence-based, pedagogically-focused analysis of teacher and student classroom practices and their perceptions, this book sheds light on ways to improve the quality of instructional practices and effective scaffolding in different types of EMI classrooms in Hong Kong and in similar contexts around the world. The examples of the EMI lessons with annotated notes which showcase good practices of EMI teaching will be particularly valuable to university EMI co-ordinators, content-subject and English teachers, and instructors doing EMI professional development courses.

Drawing on socially-oriented functional linguistics, this book offers a detailed and systematic overview of the role that language plays in clinician-patient communication in Asian contexts. Putting forward a communication model specific to this particular sociocultural and medical setting, it provides clear and research-driven recommendations for healthcare professionals. Building on cutting-edge empirical research on the health communication landscape in Asia, this book addresses topics of interest to researchers in health communication and applied linguistics more broadly. It also provides healthcare professionals with the resources necessary for a critical reflection of their professional practice. The book makes use of data gathered through a variety of methods, including audio and video recordings of clinician-patient communication, semi-structured interviews, and ethnographic observations. It also uses a cross-disciplinary approach, combining the expertise of linguists, clinicians and health communication researchers, to identify communication features of effective and ineffective interactions, focusing on the communication breakdowns and vulnerable points which jeopardize the quality and safety of the patient experience.
English for Science Communication introduces English-language knowledge and skills for scientific communication in a range of local and international contexts. It develops students’ ability to locate and critically read a variety of scientific texts and appropriately communicate, through speaking and writing, the findings of scientific projects to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. Drawing on a range of authentic texts in the domain of science, the book introduces students to common rhetorical structures in scientific communication as well as the typical vocabulary and grammar needed to express these structures. Students will learn to evaluate and report the findings of a scientific study using a range of genres, modes, and media formats, including written scientific reports and multimodal scientific documentaries. Students will also benefit from the book’s online support materials. Instructional videos on science communication and science writing — originally developed by the author and colleagues during their time at City University of Hong Kong — can be accessed via the following website: https://www.en.cityu.edu.hk/acadprofcomm/watch/science-communication. Introducing how to understand, present, write and communicate scientific information in English, this practical guide is essential for all students using English in their science degrees, including as a second language.

Jack Pun presents best practices in pedagogy and teaching to facilitate effective content-subject learning at the secondary school level. Increasingly, parents are sending their children to English Medium Instruction (EMI) secondary schools in their home countries, to prepare them for full immersion in EMI in English native-speaking countries. The book explores the teaching and learning processes in EMI senior secondary science classrooms based in thirty secondary schools in Hong Kong. Conducting analyses of classroom, teacher and student perception data, the author discusses the issues of teaching science through the medium of English in secondary schools, the implications and applications for professional development of science teachers and other content-subject teachers, and suggests strategies for teaching science in different EMI contexts. This volume is highly relevant to scholars in the field of educational linguistics, particularly in English language teaching, content-based instruction, content and language integrated learning, and English as a medium of instruction. It is also useful to education policymakers, school teachers, research students, English and education majors.

Jack Pun’s book offers the latest research in a variety of health communication settings to highlight the cultural differences between the East and the West. It focuses on the various clinical strands in health communication such as doctor-patient interactions, nurse handover, and cross-disciplinary communication to provide a broad, comprehensive overview of the complexity and heterogeneity of health communication in the Chinese context, which is gradually moving beyond a preference for Western-based models to one that considers the local culture in understanding and interpreting medical encounters. The content highlights the cultural difference between the East and the West and focuses on how traditional Chinese values underpin the nature of clinical communication in various clinical settings and how Chinese patients and practitioners conduct themselves during medical encounters. The book also covers various topics that are unique to Chinese contexts such as the use of traditional Chinese medicine in primary care, and how clinicians translate Western models of communication when working in Chinese contexts with Chinese patients. This volume will appeal to researchers working in health communication in both the East and the West as well as clinicians interested in understanding what makes effective communication with multicultural patient cohorts.
