This book demonstrates that the timing as well as the degree to which the armed forces leave the levers of political power and the nature of the successor regime depend on both external, societal, or ecological factors as well as internal, organizational, or institutional ones.

"Hidden Rage", a second novel in the series, finds Tom Lawson a consultant for Electric Boat, his wife Diana a clinical therapist, and FBI Special Agent Sam Wainwright racing against time to save the world. A young woman has been admitted to the Middletown emergency room in a psychotic state, having previously knelt in front of a stand of bushes that had burst into flames, canting warnings in an ancient language. The initial suggestion late at night by the off duty head of psychiatry, take an aspirin and call me in the morning, has led to a desperate search for clues to prevent denials of past warnings from once again causing unimaginable events from occurring. This time events that could lead to World War III. A miracle, or a hoax, the trail leads Tom and Diana and their unlikely team of FBI agent, Washington Post investigative reporter and parish priest through a spiraling web of intrigue and suspense, as they race against time to prevent the haunting words spoken in a three thousand year old language from becoming a reality. "The night will become as day. An inferno scorching the sky and all living creatures will cease to exist, rivers of black a scalding vapor never to be drawn from again. All will come to pass, the vestiges of terror will end, and those who plunder my name will do so no more."

Many generous people deserve special thanks for their assistance in the preparation and completion of this project. I wish to express my gratitude to each of the contributors for agreeing to tackle a difficult and inherently controversial subject. I am only sorry that C. I. Eugene Kim did not live long enough to see the fruits of his labor; he will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him. The Third World and the military do not respond easily to scrutiny by social scientists. Many colleagues and referees read all or part of the manuscript; I am grateful to Professors Richard Lane, Roy Christman, and Bob Kumamoto of San Jose State University and Timothy Lukes of Santa Clara University, who offered numerous helpful• comments. My parents, Panos and Athanasia Danopoulos, my brother George and his wife, Niki, my aunt Areti Paraskevopoulou, and my koumbaro George Nikoletopoulos have provided boundless moral support. Polly Taylor's expert typing and coding made the preparation of the typescript possible. Finally, my wife, Vickie, and our two sons, Panos and Andreas, deserve special thanks for their willingness to endure the long hours that writing and manuscript preparation entail. Though helpful, none of these people bear any responsibility for any problems associated with this volume. Responsibility for the accuracy and scholastic quality of what follows belongs to the contributors and myself.

After she took a joyride at an air display in 1933, Winifred Crossley's life changed forever. She decided she would learn to fly, and once she qualified as a pilot she became obsessed with mastering the difficult art of aerobatics. During the summer of 1936 she was employed as the first professional female aerobatic pilot, performing twice daily in a Tiger Moth with the last great aerial circus to tour the United Kingdom and Ireland. For the next three years she flew old-fashioned Avro 504 biplanes, tugging gliders and towing aerial advertising banners. In January 1940 she was one of the celebrated ‘First Eight’ women pilots chosen to join the Women’s Section of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) to ferry aircraft for the RAF and the Royal Navy. In July 1941 Winnie Crossley became the first woman ever to fly a frontline RAF fighter, a Hawker Hurricane. Following that successful flight the women of the ATA were eventually allowed to fly almost every aircraft to serve with the British during the war. Winnie herself flew dozens of different types, from Spitfires to Lancasters, Mustangs to Liberators, Mosquitoes to Wellingtons. She was one of only eleven women who qualified to fly four-engine heavy bombers, and one of only three of the original eight women pilots to serve from the first day to the last of the six-year existence of the Women’s Section of the ATA. A true pioneer airwoman, she is all-but forgotten today. This is her story.

This timely book is the first to critically examine the doctrine of vicarious liability in the context of the sports industry. Drawing on theoretical, empirical and interdisciplinary research, the book focuses on the close connection test at stage two of vicarious liability, highlighting how vicarious liability could be used to hold sports employers strictly liable for a wide range of on-the-field and off-the-field harms committed by their athletes. It considers the extent to which vicarious liability might be applied to clubs and sporting organisations for personal injuries and racial abuse suffered by participants during competition, and examines whether employers in the sports industry ought to be held vicariously liable for the sexual assault of young athletes and women away from the field. This book is important reading for any student, researcher or practitioner interested in sports law, tort law, private law theory, socio-legal studies, jurisprudence, gender studies and sports ethics.

A slim volume of verse, like a bicycle, offers us fresh and joyful and sometimes troubling ways of seeing the world. James Brown's eighth collection of poems begins in childhood and moves through education, jobs and the essential unremarkable activities that occupy our lives - before arriving in a post-apocalyptic future, where the nights run late and down to the wire. The poems are ever-alert to the minutiae of power, the thrill of the unexpected, and the shiny potential of an ending. Always compelling, funny, heartening, Brown speaks volumes even when claiming to have little to say. ' James Brown makes the process of reading feel effortless, but always rewards active attention. Like Stevie Smith, he can sometimes seem to be waving and drowning at the same time.' -- Bill Manhire, North & South
