Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems

Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems

James Brown; Ruel Churchill

McGraw-Hill Professional

Published by McGraw-Hill since its first edition in 1941, this classic text is an introduction to Fourier series and their applications to boundary value problems in partial differential equations of engineering and physics. It will primarily be used by students with a background in ordinary differential equations and advanced calculus. There are two main objectives of this text. The first is to introduce the concept of orthogonal sets of functions and representations of arbitrary functions in series of functions from such sets. The second is a clear presentation of the classical method of separation of variables used in solving boundary value problems with the aid of those representations. The book is a thorough revision of the seventh edition and much care is taken to give the student fewer distractions when determining solutions of eigenvalue problems, and other topics have been presented in their own sections like Gibbs' Phenomenon and the Poisson integral formula.

Award-winning author James Brown gained a cult following after chronicling his turbulent childhood and spiraling drug addiction in The Los Angeles Diaries. This River picks up where Brown left off in his first memoir, describing his tenuous relationship with sobriety, telling of agonizing relapses, and tracking his attempts to become a better father. This is the heartbreaking and at times uplifting tale of Brown's battles, peeking into his former life as an addict and detailing his subsequent ascent to sobriety and fight for redemption.

Most of us now live in towns and cities, but until relatively recently the majority of English people were villagers. What was life like for our ancestors? Were the people of the past really like us? By telling the story of the ordinary Cambridgeshire village of Gamlingay through 750 years of history from the middle ages to the present day, Villagers brings the past to life in an extraordinary way. Villagers introduces us to a myriad of fascinating people, such as the medieval widow who took a lover and lost her home, the son of an alewife who became Mayor of London, and the strutting Tudor gentleman at war with the rest of the village. We meet the husband who sold his wife, another who was too drunk to notice his wife fornicating in public, and the man who built a mansion for himself and his mistress and almost accidentally founded a Cambridge college. Based on an enormous wealth of documentary evidence gathered over thirty-five years, including manorial and parish records, wills, inventories, court cases and newspaper reports, Villagers takes the reader on a journey through time to see our ancestors as they really were.

We live in a world that all too often operates under the overriding template of self-promotion, embracing a 'hooray for me' attitude and which measures success in increasingly small timeframes dotted with markers of temporal value. Millions of viewers know James Brown as a sports commentator and former athlete. With ROLE OF A LIFETIME, James reveals a different side of his character. Part memoir and part self-help, this book draws on James' lessons from his life experiences to guide readers to find fulfilment and significance. He offers values and encouragment to others of all generations, assisting them in their search for meaning in navigating a world that increasingly promotes transient values, if any at all. His message that shortcuts and gimmicks are counterproductive to a person's success provides hope that there is a God who cares about them and their futures.
