Published in 1829, this important work raised awareness of a poorly understood topic, running to a third edition by 1841. Sir James Clark (1788–1870) had trained as a surgeon in Edinburgh and gained experience in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. During subsequent European travels, he studied the effects of climate on disease, particularly tuberculosis, and this publication represents an expanded version of his Medical Notes on Climate, Diseases, Hospitals, and Medical Schools in France, Italy, and Switzerland (1820), which is also reissued in this series. A licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians from 1826, and elected to the Royal Society in 1832, Clark became a trusted physician and friend to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection are his Treatise on Pulmonary Consumption (1835) and Memoir of John Conolly (1869).

In 1793, the Caribbean island of Dominica fell victim to the deadly yellow fever virus. The British physician James Clark (c.1737–1819), who practised on the island for many years, witnessed the outbreak at first hand. He published this descriptive account in 1797, using the work to discuss his methods of attempting to treat the disease, which was considered among the most lethal tropical ailments of the time. Long before the link between mosquitoes and disease transmission was made, Clark explains his hypothesis about the origins of the outbreak and discusses the symptoms of its sufferers as well as possible methods of prevention. He also includes chapters addressing other ailments, including typhus, dysentery, cholera and tetanus. This remains an enlightening resource in the history of the understanding and treatment of disease in tropical climates.

This collection covers many subjects - though the element of time might be considered its keystone - a sort of sequel to earlier collections entitled HOURGLASS & Other Poems, POTHOLES & Other Poems, and Time Alone? & Other Poems. Twilight is just another time-setting and can stand for a particular period in one's life or an institution or nation. In the writer's view, the nation, besides suffering under poor governance currently, is also suffering a psychological emergency, with the government aiding and abetting - if not causing - a moral decline. While sin is defined by God, morals are determined by the individual, so there's wild disagreement with that statement but to each his own, and each is entitled to his own soapbox, teleprompter, pulpit or poetry collection. Religion (including religious practices...or malpractices) is also an important subject handled in this offering.

This action was at first controversial and met with strong opposition, but it served to further the cause of humane treatment, securing Conolly's reputation. Published in 1869, this biography was the last major work of Sir James Clark (1788–1870), a supporter of Conolly's enlightened methods. Clark himself had enjoyed a distinguished medical career, becoming a trusted physician and friend to Queen Victoria. These poems fall into both categories - poetry, free verse - but the vast preponderance incorporate rhythm and rhyme. They are not sing-song, mostly deal with serious subjects, and are designed to make a point or at least provoke thought, the antithesis of purposeful obfuscation. Some are blatantly spiritual, patriotic or political, with some of the latter applicable to a particular timeframe or personage(s).

The state of Connecticut boasts an extensive and active community of fife and drum groups. This musical tradition has its origins in the small military bands maintained by standing armies in Britain and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries-the drum was especially important as it helped officers train soldiers how to march, and was also used to communicate with troops across battlefields.
