Excerpts from the book"Soon after the events of the revolution had involved the kingdoms of France and Spain, and the republics of Holland, in our quarrel, a group of laborers was collected in a field that lay exposed to the winds of the ocean, on the north-eastern coast of England. These men were lightening their toil, and cheering the gloom of a day in December, by uttering their crude opinions on the political aspects of the times. The fact that England was engaged in a war with some of her dependencies on the other side of the Atlantic had long been known to them, after the manner that faint rumors of distant and uninteresting events gain on the ear; but now that nations, with whom she had been used to battle, were armed against her in the quarrel, the din of war had disturbed the quiet even of these secluded and illiterate rustics. The principal speakers, on the occasion, were a Scotch drover, who was waiting the leisure of the occupant of the fields, and an Irish laborer, who had found his way across the Channel, and thus far over the island, in quest of employment." This book is a Fiction, very nicely penned by the author. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.

A novel of manners set in the drawing rooms, ballrooms, and Wall Street offices in 1830s New York, dramatizing conflicts that we are still grappling with nearly two hundred years later. Within months of publishing Homeward Bound, James Fenimore Cooper continued that story in a second, stand-alone novel, Home as Found. One of the most important of his long career, Home as Found is a novel of manners in which Cooper satirized Wall Street speculation, jingoism, the penny press, and high society, writing boisterously and with a sharp but critical eye about a nation in transition. He revealed "follies and peculiarities" of the young nation, but did so with a hope that the advancing forces of democracy would not get turned aside by greed and insular nationalism. In drawing rooms, ballrooms, and Wall Street offices, Cooper sees clearly into the heart of the democratic experiment, dramatizing conflicts that we are still grappling with nearly two hundred years later. Stephen Carl Arch provides a historical introduction discussing Cooper's composition of the novel and its politicized reception in journals and newspapers, along with detailed explanatory notes. This authoritative edition draws upon the first edition, a partial author's manuscript, and a substantial (but not complete) amanuensis copy of the author's manuscript; and provides a full scholarly apparatus discussing the editorial choices. It has been approved by the Committee on Scholarly Editions of the Modern Language Association. The Writings of James Fenimore Cooper The distinguished Cooper scholar James Franklin Beard (1919–1989) began organizing the Writings of James Fenimore Cooper in the late 1960s, as his work on publishing the monumental Letters and Journals of James Fenimore Cooper came to fulfillment. Beard's intention was to provide readers with sound scholarly editions of Cooper's major works, based wherever possible on authorial manuscripts. To date, the Writings of James Fenimore Cooper has made available texts of many of Cooper's best-known novels, as well as some of his most important works of political and social commentary.

The Deerslayer, or The First War Path, is the final book in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series, published in 1841. In this book, Natty Bumppo is introduced as ""Deerslayer,"" a juvenile outlaw in early 18th-century New York. Deerslayer opposes the practice of scalping, arguing that all living beings should adhere to ""nature's gifts."" Henry March and ""Floating Tom"" Hutter are two individuals that genuinely want to kill people. To slaughter and scalp as many Hurons as they can, Hutter and March sneak into their camp, but they are caught in the process. After Hutter passes away, Judith sets out to identify her biological father, but her investigation only reveals that her deceased mother was of noble lineage and had wed ""Floating Tom"" after an extramarital affair failed. Later, Judith tries to save Deerslayer but is unsuccessful. Finally, everyone is saved when March appears with English troops and massacres the Hurons while terminally wounding Hetty. When Bumppo and Chingachgook revisit the location fifteen years later, they discover Hutt's home in ruins.
