James George Frazer (1854-1941) oli 20. sajandi alguse küllap kuulsaim antropoloog, kelle seisukohad jahmatasid uudsusega ja kelle intellektuaalne haare äratas imetlust. Tema töö aitas kaasa antropoloogia kui iseseisva distsipliini eneseleidmisele ning mõjutas mitte ainult hilisemaid antropolooge, vaid tervet põlvkonda kirjanikke ja kunstnikke, sh T. S. Elioti, D. H. Lawrence'it, Ezra Poundi jpt, saades lahutamatuks osaks 20. sajandi Euroopa vaimuloost. Frazeri tohutust kirjanduslikust pärandist tõuseb esile tema peateos "Kuldne oks"." Kuldne oks" on legendaarse mainega antropoloogiline teos, mis on läbi aegade köitnud ka laiemat lugejaskonda. Tõukudes ühest hämara tähendusega Rooma rituaalist, pürgib teos esitama inimkonna vaimse ja intellektuaalse evolutsiooni panoraami algelisest metslusest kuni oma kaasaja Euroopa tsivilisatsioonini. Teosest ilmus kolm aina paisuvat väljaannet: 1890 kaks köidet, 1900 kolm köidet, 1906-1915 kaksteist köidet. 1922 tegi autor sellest üheköitelise lühenduse; 1994. aastal, andes tunnistust raamatu kestvast köitvusest, koostas Robert Fraser uue lühenduse, millel põhineb käesolev tõlge.

It was one of the most influential texts in anthropology and helped to establish anthropology as a real science. This one-volume abridgment is aimed at a large literate audience. The object of this work is to familiarize readers with the cultural habits, taboos, beliefs and, with the ancient origins of the world's myths, rituals, superstitions, and religions.
