Sex, and appearing on television."1968 – a year of protest that divided America. As two men fight to become the next President, all eyes are on the battle between two others: the cunningly conservative William F. Buckley Jr., and the iconoclastic liberal Gore Vidal. Beliefs are challenged and slurs slung as these political idols feud nightly in a new television format, debating the moral landscape of a shattered nation. Little do they know they’re about to open up a new frontier in American politics, and transform television news forever…Best of Enemies is the electric new play by James Graham (Quiz, Labour of Love), directed by Jeremy Herrin, inspired by the documentary by Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon. This revised and updated edition was published to coincide with the West End transfer to the Noel Coward Theatre in November 2022.

This anthology of poetry is the second such book from British/Canadian author James Graham. If you look at the stars, as through the clear skies of the Canadian Rockies, you can experience a sense of timelessness. Maybe, also, a sense of humility and understanding that, through the miracle of life, we are part of the universe into which we gaze. A starry night expands our minds - and that's the intention of the poetry in this book. It doesn't take us into deep space. Rather, it takes us into the deep sub-conscious, where we respond to a chord of music, the burned-fuel aroma of the open road or a line from a song that blows on the forgotten embers of an old love. Poetry can get behind the mask of everyday experience and remind us of a recollected joy, the re-connecting of a wire when suddenly, the hidden self bursts Into the Light.

The essays in this volume examine what we talk about when we talk about climate, particularly in relation to architecture and its allied fields. How does climate inflect our understanding of human settlement, global migration, spatial violence, and resource extraction? How does climate figure into our conception of what architecture is and does? What are the material and conceptual infrastructures that render climate legible, knowable, and actionable? How do these questions offer new vantage points on the architectural ramifications of climate change, amplifying our understanding of resiliency, sustainability, and ecotechnology? Investigating climatic territories, imaginaries, and visibility, these essays clarify the exigencies of environment through design.
For the first time, this play - first performed in 2012 at the National Theatre - is published in the Methuen Drama Student Edition series. It features commentary & notes by Nicholas Holden, Lecturer in Drama at the University of Greenwich, UK, that help the student unpack the play's social, political and cultural context, as well as its themes, language, structure and production history. In tough times, the British do what we have always done. We muddle through. This House is a razor-sharp political comedy exploring Westminster and the 1974 British hung parliament, which provides a timely historical correlative to the current political climate. It's the play that secured the then-30-year-old James Graham's reputation as one of the UK's most important and revered dramatists, gaining critical acclaim, enjoying a sell-out run at the National Theatre's Olivier in 2013 and being revived in the West End in 2017, when it was Olivier-nominated. With well-paced, witty and waspish dialogue, it explores the childish digs and chauvinistic attitudes that have riddled political life both then and continue to do so now.
I want to tell you a story. And it's true. That's what makes it a good fucking story, right, 'cause all the best stories are true. Fleet Street. 1969. The Sun rises. James Graham's ruthless, red-topped play leads with the birth of this country's most influential newspaper – when a young and rebellious Rupert Murdoch asked the impossible and launched its first editor's quest, against all odds, to give the people what they want. Ink premiered at the Almeida Theatre in London before transferring to the West End and later Broadway. It was nominated for both the Olivier and Tony Award for Best New Play. This new edition features an introduction by Harry Derbyshire.
A priest, closing up his chapel for the night, is waylaid by a man confessing to be a murderer. The man's grip on reality seems far from firm, and the priest faces a startling dilemma. Does he investigate it further on his own? Or does he take the story to the authorities? A crew of fisherman receive a mysterious distress call, many miles from shore, and venture into the foggy waters in search of a sinking ship. Instead, they find an uncharted rocky island, covered in strange runes and disturbing carvings... A family from the big city rents a camp in the north woods for a couple of weeks. They enjoy spending time together, fishing, playing board games, and soaking up the sunshine. But something seems to be stalking the woods around them, and they are many miles from civilization... These stories and more await within. From misty shorelines, to ancient forests, to forgotten farmlands, only one thing is certain. It's not just our nightmares which are filled with Aberrations and Apparitions.
This country doesn't need a constitution, never has, never will. We have History as our guide. In tough times, the British do what we have always done. We muddle through. Britain’s most prominent political dramatist James Graham achieved the impossible in bringing the backroom world of MPs, whips and fractured political parties to the stage. Originally staged at the National Theatre, This House is a timely and relevant political comedy, exploring Westminster and the 1974 hung parliament. In the run-up to the General Election pressure mounts as squabbling whips attempt to attract key regional votes. As it becomes clear the results will be closely balanced, the play tracks the formation, perils and consequences of a coalition government, including the compromises, conflicts and power games all in the interest of gaining control of Parliament. With well-paced, witty and waspish dialogue, This House playfully explores the childish digs and chauvinistic attitudes that riddle political life. Graham combines comedy with comment in this portrayal of the strain between the thinking individual, the pressure to toe the party line and the end goal of winning government. This House premiered at the Cottesloe Theatre at the National Theatre in 2012. Methuen Drama’s iconic Modern Plays series began in 1959 with the publication of Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste of Honey and has grown across six decades to now include more than 1000 plays by some of the best writers from around the world. This new special edition hardback of This House was published to celebrate 60 years of Methuen Drama’s Modern Plays in 2019, chosen by a public vote and features a foreword by Baroness Ann Taylor.

Charles Dickens' London is reimagined for the 21st century. Twenty-four hours in the life of a city that has 371 people in every square kilometer, where every street and square shelters heroes and villains, emotional turmoil, violent allegiances, adventures, the remarkable and the everyday. Olivier Award-winning playwright James Graham forges a uniquely crowd-sourced play, incorporating scenes by emerging writers into his own sweeping narrative. Dickens' panoply of London and Londoners, his big characters and fantastic stories in Sketches by Boz are updated for the modern age, incorporating the broadest range of voices from across the community in a theatrical whirligig of wonder and imagination.

January 2018, and a busy day at the offices of Hull 2017. Today is the ceremonial handover to ambassadors from the next UK City of Culture. Meanwhile, the monitoring and evaluation team have to present The Audit – a measurement of the impact ‘the culture’ has had on the city. Can their logic models, outcome evaluations and statistical analyses really measure its impact on the people of Hull? The visiting Minister from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport certainly expect so. What could go wrong…? Only, perhaps, Dennis, an average citizen who arrives into the offices of Hull 2017 on lowgate to register a complaint but accidentally finds himself at the centre of events that could bring the whole thing to its kneesThe Culture is a satirical farce in two acts, examining the 'culture' of culture, and the inner workings of the Hull 2017 project.

Labour MP David Lyons cares about modernisation and "electability"... his constituency agent, Jean Whittaker cares about principles and her community. Set away from the Westminster bubble in the party's traditional northern heartlands, this is a clash of philosophy, culture and class against the backdrop of the Labour Party over 25 years, as it moves from Kinnock through Blair into Corbyn... and beyond? This razor-sharp political comedy from James Graham was produced by Michael Grandage Company and Headlong and received its world Premiere at the Noël Coward Theatre in September 2017.

The election and inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the president of the United States of America have provoked an unprecedented intensity of reflection in virtually all academic disciplines. The professions of architecture and planning, faced with the phenomenon of a self-proclaimed "builder-in-chief," have found themselves facing a series of fundamental questions, both old and new. How should we think, teach, and practice under a developer presidency? What sort of walls will we and won't we choose to build? What are our commitments of critical thought, and what obligations should we turn our energies toward? The essays gathered in And Now explore the nature of architecture's many long-standing complicities. Architecture coordinates colossal expenditures (of material, of energy); it scripts forms of labor (in its construction, in its operation, and in the programs it houses); and it is both a repository and generator of capital. Architecture participates, centrally, in defining modes of life, whether for the privileged or the dispossessed-designing and building the boundaries between the "haves" and the "have-nots." This fundamental reality of architectural practice need not inspire either nihilism or defensiveness but should rather be understood, quite simply, as the terrain we navigate. Naming these complicities and the injustices they perpetuate is a first step toward addressing them.
