The US-China Military and Defense Relationship during the Obama Presidency
This book offers a timely and compelling explanation for the deterioration of U. S.-China security relations during the Obama Presidency. The U. S.-China relationship has become one of (if not the most) vital features of contemporary world politics, and with arrival the Donald Trump to the White House in 2017, this vital geopolitical relationship sits at a precarious and dangerous crossroads. This book assesses a wide array of sources to systematically unpack the policy rhythms, drivers, and dynamics that defined the course of Sino-American security relations during the Obama-era. It fills several gaps in the literature on international security and conflict and offers a nuanced and innovative comparative approach to examine individual military domains. The case study chapters draw on recent Chinese and English sources - on military doctrine, capabilities, and defense strategy - to build a clear understanding the main sources of U. S.-China misperceptions, and highlight the problems theseassessments can create for the conduct of statecraft across strategically competitive geopolitical dyads. The book builds a sobering picture of U. S.-China relations that will appeal to specialists and generalists alike with an interest in future warfare, emerging military-technologies, military studies, arms control, and foreign policy issues in the Asia-Pacific region more broadly.

The Road to Whitney: Two Schmucks Challenge Themselves and the Wilderness

"By the time the rain turned to snow, my jeans weighed as much as the bear canister sitting upon James' backpack. Unfortunately, the snow was no reprieve from the wetness of the rain. In fact, the snow added another element to our trip. Not only was the trail now mud but the snow made the trail slick. Maybe not for James in his trail rated hikers, but certainly for me in my downtown, Trailgear, Christmas presents. My feet would have been just as protected in the box that housed the shoes. Onward we pressed. The bravado was still strong. We marched up the trail, and I sometimes slid back and marched on again. Besides making the trail slick, another fine attribute of the snow was its ability to accumulate. It amassed on my head, my hands, and my backpack. Rule number 2 was taking a beating. So, like the rain before it, it wasn't too long before I was cursing the snow. Fortunately, like the rain, we didn't have to put up with the snow forever." James Johnson and I, Cameron Williams, decided to test ourselves by entering the woods for a weekend with only what we could carry on our backs. Although, as the above passage depicts, the first test was a complete failure, we were so enthralled by the experience that we decided to try again, and again, and again..... Three years and multiple trips into the woods later, we sat atop the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. This book chronicles our multiple failures, our few successes, and the lessons we learned by trial and error over those three years. This book can and should be used as a backpacking guide as well as a trail guide for some of the most spectacular trails in the western United States. But at it's core, this book is a tale of two average guys that achieved more than they thought they could and along the way, forged an unbreakable friendship.

A Practical Discourse Necessary for These Times. The Great Duty of Doing as we Would be Done Unto, Explain'd and Enforc'd, in a Sermon. By James Johnson,
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. The Priority of Democracy

The Priority of Democracy

Pragmatism and its consequences are central issues in American politics today, yet scholars rarely examine in detail the relationship between pragmatism and politics. In The Priority of Democracy, Jack Knight and James Johnson systematically explore the subject and make a strong case for adopting a pragmatist approach to democratic politics--and for giving priority to democracy in the process of selecting and reforming political institutions. What is the primary value of democracy? When should we make decisions democratically and when should we rely on markets? And when should we accept the decisions of unelected officials, such as judges or bureaucrats? Knight and Johnson explore how a commitment to pragmatism should affect our answers to such important questions. They conclude that democracy is a good way of determining how these kinds of decisions should be made--even if what the democratic process determines is that not all decisions should be made democratically. So, for example, the democratically elected U. S. Congress may legitimately remove monetary policy from democratic decision-making by putting it under the control of the Federal Reserve. Knight and Johnson argue that pragmatism offers an original and compelling justification of democracy in terms of the unique contributions democratic institutions can make to processes of institutional choice. This focus highlights the important role that democracy plays, not in achieving consensus or commonality, but rather in addressing conflicts. Indeed, Knight and Johnson suggest that democratic politics is perhaps best seen less as a way of reaching consensus or agreement than as a way of structuring the terms of persistent disagreement.
