The world stands at a watershed; the actions of a few individuals can bring humanity back to the dark ages, or towards a golden age of human civilisation. Humanity's traits are the only constant amongst these and an understanding of it would allow us a better glimpse of our future. This book aims to look far beyond the 21st century and see how human life is like, based on our actions today. It is an attempt to understand the innate differences between humans and artificial intelligence and how a symbiotic relationship would allow AI and humans to co-exist. In 21st century Earth, the climate will be vastly different from today. Our economy will be forcibly restructured into only the essential industries. Luxuries would cease to exist, together with a large part of humanity as the fury of Mother Nature is merciless and relentless. We look to other planets as our only hope of survival and it is this spaceward look that we understand our place in the cosmos. Will humans eventually evolve into a spacefaring civilisation to escape our end on earth? Will we encounter a more advanced civilisation? Or will humanity succumb to the harsh climate changes of earth and join the many species who have become extinct?

In the dynamic digital age, the widespread use of computers has transformed engineering and science. A realistic and successful solution of an engineering problem usually begins with an accurate physical model of the problem and a proper understanding of the assumptions employed. With computers and appropriate software we can model and analyze complex physical systems and problems. However, efficient and accurate use of numerical results obtained from computer programs requires considerable background and advanced working knowledge to avoid blunders and the blind acceptance of computer results. This book provides the background and knowledge necessary to avoid these pitfalls, especially the most commonly used numerical methods employed in the solution of physical problems. It offers an in-depth presentation of the numerical methods for scales from nano to macro in nine self-contained chapters with extensive problems and up-to-date references, covering: Trends and new developments in simulation and computationWeighted residuals methodsFinite difference methodsFinite element methodsFinite strip/layer/prism methodsBoundary element methodsMeshless methodsMolecular dynamicsMultiphysics problemsMultiscale methods

Better Living through Neurochemistry: A guide to the optimization of serotonin, dopamine and the neurotransmitters that color your world
Brand new revised and updated version of Your Brain Electric for 2017 In brain science, there are two phenomena which are becoming increasing common in modern society. Firstly, rates of depression and anxiety disorders are increasing, with as many as one in five people either clinically depressed or anxious at any given time. Secondly, our aging population is revealing a range of cognitive problems associated with aging, including memory loss and other cognitive impairments. Each of these has a common thread - They are underpinned by clear deficits in neurochemical function. You have probably heard that "depression is caused by a serotonin imbalance" (sometimes, but not always, this is the case), however did you also know - - Depression can be caused by low dopamine or noradrenaline (norepinephrine) - Problems with aceylcholine and glutamate can lead to cognitive, memory and attention-related issues - Deficits in your natural opioids (such as endorphins) not only leads to increased pain, but also poor tolerance to stressful life events or situations However the good news is that whether your problem is serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, glutamate, endorphins or any of the other major neurotransmitters and neuro-hormones, your situation is usually fixable with either medication, supplements, cognitive behavioral therapy or other lifestyle modifications. They key is to first know exactly how it feels to be deficient in a particular neurotransmitter. For example, did you know that - - Just the simple act of writing out a plan on how you will change your life for the better can boost serotonin and dopamine - Just hanging out with friends and loved ones boosts serotonin - Most people who are diagnosed with depression will receive a medication to boost serotonin, however for many people, serotonin is not their problem - Meditation has been shown to boost serotonin In his latest book, following on from his hugely successful anti-aging book, The Methuselah Project, James Lee gives you all you need to know regarding the major neurotransmitters including - - What they are - What do they do in your brain and body - What are the symptoms when they are depleted - How to boost levels Lee also details some of the more obscure (yet no less important) neurochemicals such as substance P, which has recently been implicated in neuropathic pain conditions and poor tolerance to stress. As always, Lee has focused on creating a book that sticks to the key facts to create a boredom-free exploration of that mysterious electrical activity that is occurring 24/7, between your ears.

The new and revised edition of James Lee's top selling book Brain 2.0 Nootropic substances shouldn't be a secret, benefiting only the select few who are 'in the know'. You CAN hack your brain's operating system to achieve heightened levels of cognitive abilities Do any of the following statements sound familiar to you? - As I get older, my mind seems to be slowing down and I am forgetting things - I am having trouble concentrating and maintaining focus on important tasks - I am suffering from low mood and lack motivation - I have been diagnosed with a neurological disease such as Alzheimer's, Parkinsons or Multiple Sclerosis and I want to do everything I can to slow the progression of my illness (* note - nootropics are not cures for these illnesses - they can just help slow the progression, along with the various pharmaceutical options) - My days involve demanding cognitive requirements (college students or certain professionals) and I want to do what I can to get a mental edge, without dangerous side-effects As with my other guides, the aim of this guide is to distill all the complex research into a simple, concise document which lays out all the information you need to know on the various nootropic supplements and drugs available today. Some of these nootropics, such as the racetams, are virtually unknown outside of 'brain hacking' circles. And even then, most of the information available only refers to piracetam, the most well-known of this class of powerful neuro-enhancers. How much is a high performance brain worth to you?

All the content from "Brain 2.0", "Chill Pills & Mood Food" plus a brand new section on using exercise to repair and optimize your brain. Learn how to build a better brain than the competition through clever nutrition, supplementation and exercise therapy. James Lee is driven to do whatever it takes to build a better brain. This obsession has seen him spend hundreds of hours scouring through research journals and meta-analyses to find exactly what works and what doesn't work. In his quest to find out all there is to know about the emerging area of nootropics, he has assembled a group of supplements and drugs which have all demonstrated clear effectiveness in clinical trials and experiential reports. But there is one hard and fast rule - enhanced mood or cognition can never be at the expense of long term brain health. Sure, anyone can do a line of meth and stay up all night getting work done - but at what long term cost? Fortunately, you can enhance mood, cognition and memory recall by slowly repairing and enhancing your brain. In this book you will learn about - - What is "acetylcholine" and why is it so important for brain function? - What are "racetams"? - What supplements have matched pharmaceutical drugs for antidepressant effectiveness? - What is "curcumin" and why can it reduce inflammation in the brain and treat depression? - What drugs are safe to use to enhance brain function? Note - for anyone who has already read Lee's previous books, this book is a compendium of "Brain 2.0.", "Chill Pills & Mood Food" along with a brand new section on exercise and the brain. This book tells the story of ‘the Lady Footballers’. It covers their 1895 and 1896 tours through the eyes of the largely unsympathetic British press. It explains gender issues of the time, and the financial problems that doomed this experiment. Despite increasing opportunities in sport for British women during the late nineteenth century, virtually every segment of society opposed the idea of women playing football. In 1895, Nettie Honeyball and Florence Dixie formed the British Ladies’ Football Club (BLFC) intending to introduce the game to women and girls as a means of recreation and profit, over 10,000 spectators crowded the football ground in London to watch the BLFC in its first match. Nearly every London newspaper covered the event. These women endured public ridicule. They ignited the gender prejudice of the time, and confronted it head on wearing ‘men’s’ kit, and playing ‘men’s rules.’ Football's mystique was that it was a manly sport for men, thus these women footballers symbolized a paradox: those playing well were gender freaks; those not playing well proved it was a male game. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
