Can the authentic words and deed of Jesus identified by the Jesus Seminar furnish a sufficient basis for a credible profile of the Jesus of history? That is the challenge faced by the contributors to this volume. Their efforts have resulted in a unique collection of studied impressions of Jesus. Here readers will see not Jesus the icon of myth and creed, but a provocative young man of first-century Palestine whose vision and determination to live the vision gave birth to a new form of faith and changed the course of history.

About the Contributor(s): James M. Robinson is Professor of Religion Emeritus at Claremont Graduate University, where he was founder and director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity. As permanent secretary of UNESCO's International Committee for the Nag Hammadi Codices, he edited The Coptic Gnostic Library, reprinted in five volumes (2000); among his many other publications is Language, Hermeneutic, and History.

Synopsis: The United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) entrusted author James Robinson with tracking down the place where the Nag Hammadi Codices had been discovered. Priests whom the author interviewed in the region told Robinson that the codices had once been in the possession of a priest in the town of Dishna, a bit further upstream than Nag Hammadi itself. Robinson found that this priest had not had the Nag Hammadi Codices but rather the Bodmer Papyri. For Dishna is where the monastery headquarters of the first monastic order was located. The Bodmer Papyri discovery consisted of all that was left of the library of the Pachomian monastic order: Coptic letters of Pachomius and very early Greek copies of Luke and John, perhaps donated when Athanasius was in hiding at the monastery. These treasures were preserved in a jar hidden in the mountain where monks were buried. This book traces the story of the Bodmer Papyri from beginning to end. Endorsements: "Only James M. Robinson--based largely on first-hand experience--could recall, review, and evaluate the intricate details of the discovery and collection of the Dishn_ papers, which became part of the "Bodmer papyri." In a detective-like fashion, he traces the complex history of this sizable collection, utilizing conversations, letters, and reports from native discoverers, Egyptian antiquities dealers, collectors of manuscripts, museum curators and conservators, as well as papyrologists, Coptologists, and editors of Greek, Latin, and Coptic texts. This history can never again be retrieved, and Robinson's account will serve all future generations." --Eldon Jay Epp author of Perspectives on New Testament Textual Criticism "As a young professor at the University of Geneva at the end of the sixties, I was invited with my students by Mr. Martin Bodmer to visit his collection of New Testament Papyri. Since then I have a special connection and affection to these manuscripts. I am grateful therefore to James M. Robinson for his patient inquiry. I cannot confirm everything that he says, but I can assure the readers that the scholar from Claremont put his many talents toward trying to solve some of the many riddles of the Bodmer Papyri." --Fran ois Bovon Frothingham research Professor of the History of Religion Harvard Divinity School Author Biography: James M. James M. Robinson, together with John B. Cobb, published a series of three volumes entitled New Frontiers in Theology: The Later Heidegger and Theology (1963), The New Hermeneutic (1964), and Theology as History (1967). Here they introduced the new directions that Continental theology was taking after the break caused by the Nazi period and World War II. In each volume it was Robinson's assignment to write an extensive introduction of the new direction: "The German Discussion of the Later Heidegger," "Hermeneutic since Barth," and "Revelation as Word and as History." Then others contributed essays. These three seminar introductions are here brought together in a single volume, which thus is the basic tool for getting into the Continental theology of the second half of the twentieth century.

The discovery of a previously lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot has electrified the Christian community. What Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell us about Judas, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, is inconsistent and biased. Therefore, the revelation of an ancient gospel that portrays this despised man as someone who saw his role in the Passion of Christ as integral to a larger plan--a divine plan--brings new clarity to the old story. If Judas had not betrayed Jesus, Jesus would not have been handed over to the authorities, crucified, buried, and raised from the dead. Could it be that without Judas, the Easter miracle would never have happened? In The Secrets of Judas, James M. Robinson, an expert historian of early Christianity, examines the Bible and other ancient texts and reveals what we can and cannot know about the life of the historical Judas, his role in Jesus's crucifixion, and whether the Christian church should reevaluate his intentions and possible innocence. Robinson tells the sensational story of the discovery of a gospel attributed to Judas, and shows how this affects Judas's newfound meaning for history and for the Christian faith.

Who was Jesus, really? In these pages, Robinson, one of the premier scholars of the New Testament and the "Sayings Gospel Q", asks what we can know of Jesus from what many believe was the earliest written source behind the Gospels. Surprising insights abound and the author includes an autobiographical essay charting the important currents in New Testament scholarship over the last fifty years. The book also includes a translation of "Q".

The meticulously researched story of the discovery, acquisition and conservation of the 4th-century Manichaean Codices of Medinet Madi. The seven Manichaean papyrus codices of the fourth or fifth century were discovered in illicit excavation in 1929 in the Egyptian desert. They were acquired in about equal halves by A. Chester Beatty for his library and by Carl Schmidt for the papyrus collection of the Staatliche Museen of Berlin. Having had access to the inventories, correspondence, and files in Berlin, Robinson provides translations of the German and French documents to increase access to information previously unavailable to the scholarly community. He narrates the slow and problem-ridden path of the acquisition, conservation, and editing of these important works, including their movements between dealers, collectors, scholars, and the military in Egypt, London, Dublin, Berlin, Schondorf, Göttingen, Warsaw, Leningrad, Los Angeles, Claremont, and Copenhagen.

The best text and the best translation are presented in this classic introductory book to the "Gospel of Thomas". In December 1945, at the base of cliffs that run along the Nile River near the modern-day town of Nag Hammadi, an Egyptian farmer discovered a sealed jar containing thirteen ancient Coptic codices. This discovery represented arguably the most significant manuscript discovery of the twentieth century for the study of the New Testament and Christian origins. Of all the texts found none has been more important than the "Gospel of Thomas" for our understanding of early Christianity. This classic book presents the best text and the best translation of Thomas in user-friendly form. Additional chapters provide a general introduction to the "Gospel of Thomas" and tell the fascinating story of that discovery itself by one who was directly involved in bringing this new Gospel to light. An annotated list 'for further reading' completes the volume. This new edition features updated material which takes account of recent research on the "Gospel of Thomas". The translation has been refined at points, and the bibliographical material updated.

This is the most complete, up-to-date, one-volume, English-language edition of the renowned library of fourth-century Gnostic manuscripts discovered in Egypt in 1945, which rivaled the Dead Sea Scrolls find in significance.

This book is must reading for those interested in the development of German theology in the latter half of the twentieth century."" --Paul J. Achtemeier, Union Theological Seminary, Emeritus ""The New Frontier Series had a particular meaning for the time the volumes were published. We live today at a very different time. But in each volume there was one long essay of enduring value, a detailed and insightful study of the history of the Continental theology out of which the theological developments of the 1960s came. Nowhere else has the theology of this period been so thoroughly explained. This volume brings these essays together."" --John B. Cobb Jr., cofounder of the Center for Process Studies About the Contributor(s): James M. Robinson did his doctorate under Karl Barth in Basel, Switzerland (1952). He taught again and again as Visiting Professor at Continental universities: G ttingen (1959), Z rich (1960, 1962), Strasbourg (1970-71), T bingen (1986), Geneva (1992), and Bamberg (1997). As an expert on Continental theology, he experienced the shift from the prewar debate of the Confessing Church to the postwar focus on demythologizing (Rudolf Bultmann), language (the later Heidegger), the new hermeneutic (Ernst Fuchs and Gerhard Ebeling), and neo-conservatism (Wolfhart Pannenberg).
