The Seven Arts was a small literary journal with grandiose ambitions. It propagated a cultural vision that recognized the challenges of the moment-particularly the Great War in Europe-while looking ahead to a period of spiritual, intellectual, and social renewal. "It is our faith," wrote the editors, "that we are living in the first days of a renascent period, a time which means for America the coming of that national self-consciousness which is the beginning of greatness." The Seven Arts did not merely take part in this regeneration-it manifested its potential.
