James Woodward

The past few decades have seen an explosion of research on causal reasoning in philosophy, computer science, and statistics, as well as descriptive work in psychology. In Causation with a Human Face, James Woodward integrates these lines of research and argues for an understanding of how each can inform the other: normative ideas can suggest interesting experiments, while descriptive results can suggest important normative concepts. Woodward's overall framework builds on the interventionist treatment of causation that he developed in Making Things Happen. Normative ideas discussed include proposals about the role of invariant or stable relationships in successful causal reasoning and the notion of proportionality. He argues that these normative ideas are reflected in the causal judgments that people actually make as a descriptive matter. Woodward also discusses the common philosophical practice-particularly salient in philosophical accounts of causation--of appealing to "intuitions" or "judgments about cases" in support of philosophical theses. He explores how, properly understood, such appeals are not different in principle from appeals to results from empirical research, and demonstrates how they may serve as a useful source of information about causal cognition.

This book series was originally created for my grandson. It takes a vivid imagination for a child to take a cardboard box and transform it into a rocket ship. The Battle Bug series is a fun way for children to learn about insects and their natural defenses. This first book is about greed and what happens when greed enters your heart. It shows how greed can separate even the best of friends Book 2 is about honesty. I wrote these books to give children moral values while teaching them about insects and their natural environments and defense mechanisms. I sincerely hope you and your child enjoy this series. Sincerely, J. A. Woodward

Readings from the Gospel of John are brought into all the other Common Worship Lectionary years, for major occasions like Christmas or Easter, and to help reflection about the meaning of Jesus life and teaching. There are also several miracles (or sings) which are not mentioned in the other Gospels and can only be found in John, such as the wedding at Cana. A large proportion of the Gospel of John appears in Years A, B and C. The series unique slant is that it asks readers to use their imagination to bring the Gospel to life. It asks them to visualize themselves in the scenes that John describes in order to see the Gospels in a fresh and exciting way.

This book provides resources for simple services for weekdays throughout the year. The services have been tried, tested and successfully used and are ideal for small, informal groups. Each service includes a short, straightforward reading taken from the Gospels or Epistles and a comment. The latter takes the form of a brief exposition which draws on ordinary experience and every day life. There are also suggestions for prayer, either there and then or privately after the service is over. Often, the theme that is highlighted each week lends itself to discussion among those present, perhaps prompted by appropriate questions about experience or preferences. This book, the first of its kind, is an excellent resource for services with a wide range of people, including young mothers, the elderly and carers.

Woodward's long awaited book is an attempt to construct a comprehensive account of causation explanation that applies to a wide variety of causal and explanatory claims in different areas of science and everyday life. The book engages some of the relevant literature from other disciplines, as Woodward weaves together examples, counterexamples, criticisms, defenses, objections, and replies into a convincing defense of the core of his theory, which is that we can analyze causation by appeal to the notion of manipulation.

Although most of us desire a life of peace and commitment, sometimes we are required to look death in face – be it through bereavement, serious illness or even the end of a relationship. This book is addressed to the Christian reader who wants to reflect.

Turgenev's novel about conflicting ideas, social classes and generations questions human nature and man's place in the universe. This is one in a series offering a critical analysis of Russian texts and surveying the different interpretations that have been suggested.
