Kirjafiilin kirjailijaesittely

Austen syntyi joulukuussa 1775 Steventonissa, Hampshiren kreivikunnassa.

Keskeiset teokset

Austenin tunnetuimpia teoksia ovat Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) sekä Emma (1815). Nämä romaanit käsittelevät taitavasti säätyeroja, sukupuolirooleja ja valtaa yhteiskunnassa. Hänen viimeiset teoksensa, Persuasion ja Northanger Abbey, julkaistiin postuumisti vuonna 1817.

Vaikka monet hänen teoksistaan julkaistiin alun perin nimettöminä, ne saavuttivat vähitellen laajan suosion. Erityisesti Ylpeys ja ennakkoluulo on noussut yhdeksi maailman tunnetuimmista romaaneista.

Viimeiset vuodet

Jaksaako tosirakkaus odottaa? Viisasteleva sydän on Austenin viimeinen romaani.

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘The real evils, indeed, of Emma’s situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself…’ Beautiful, rich, self-assured and witty, Emma Woodhouse delights in matchmaking those around her, with no apparent care for her own romantic life. Taking young Harriet Smith under her wing, Emma sets her sights on finding a suitable match for her friend. Chided for her mistakes by old friend Mr Knightley, it is only when Harriet starts to pursue her own love interests that Emma realises the true hidden depths of her own heart.

Sense and Sensibility | Pride and Prejudice | Mansfield Park | Emma | Northanger Abbey | Persuasion | Love and FreindshipFew novelists have conveyed the subtleties and nuances of their own social milieu with the wit and insight of Jane Austen. Through her vivacious and spirited heroines and their circle, she paints vivid portraits of English middle-class life as the eighteenth century came to a close. Each of the novels is a love story and a story about marriage - marriage for love, for financial security, for social status. But they are not mere romances; ironic, comic and wise, they are masterly studies of the society Jane Austen observed. The seven books in this box set contain some of the most brilliant, dazzling prose in the English language.

Emma (1816) is Jane Austen's most characteristic work. Convinced that she understands the world, Emma rules over her invalid father and the small social circle of Highbury with well-meaning tyranny. But she is highly fallible where love is concerned, and her failings there cause many misunderstandings - as well as giving the reader much enjoyment as order is restored. In her new introduction to this edition Terry Castle examines the pleasure given by Emma's reassuringly stable world and by its comedy, and examines the relationships, imagery, and continuing power of Austen's perhaps greatest novel.
