This is a new edition of "Sense and Sensibility," originally published in 1896 by Macmillan and Co., Ltd., of London, England, with an introduction by Austin Dobson and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Part of the project Immortal Literature Series of classic literature, this is a new edition of the classic work published in 1896-not a facsimile reprint. Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Pen House Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility is-together with Pride and Prejudice-perhaps one of the finest and most popular novels ever written. It tells the story of the "Miss Dashwoods" sisters, the sensible Elinor and the passionate Marianne, whose chances at marriage seem doomed by their family's sudden loss of fortune. The reader will be delighted with this romantic suspense and with Austen's elegant narrative style, and with the story's fascinating characters and their social interactions. About the Author: Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist whose seminal works, inspired by her own upbringing as well as in the landed gentry, have influenced successive generations. She was the seventh child-out of eight-and second daughter of Cassandra (n e Leigh) and the Reverend George Austen. She was born on December 16, 1775, in Steventon, Hampshire, England. Her parents were well-respected middle-class community members. Her father was the local Anglican clergyman and supplemented the family income by taking private pupils in the family home and parsonage. Her mother, Cassandra Leigh Austen, came from an aristocratic family and influenced Jane's sense of social class and self-worth. When they were young, Jane and her six brothers and sister were encouraged to read from their father's extensive library. With a romantic vein, but nevertheless a realist-known for her style and ironic humor as well as for her fascinating depiction of women's domestic roles of the early nineteenth century-Austen wrote "Sense and Sensibility" (1811), "Pride and Prejudice" (1813), "Mansfield Park" (1814), "Emma" (1815), "Northanger Abbey" (1817), and "Persuasion" (1818), all of which replete with memorable protagonists.

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman, Mr Bennet, living in Longbourn. Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters after two gentlemen have moved into their neighbourhood: the rich and eligible Mr Bingley, and his status-conscious friend, the even richer and more eligible Mr Darcy. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy is disdainful of local society and repeatedly clashes with the Bennets' lively second daughter, Elizabeth. Pride and Prejudice retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of "most loved books". It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, selling over 20 million copies, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Likewise, it has paved the way for archetypes that abound in many contemporary literature of our time. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. Emma is a novel by the Englishwoman Jane Austen, published anonymously (A Novel, December 1815, by the author of Sense and Sensibility and Pride) Mocking the attempts of the heroine to make meet the bachelors of his entourage the ideal spouse, painted with humor the life and problems of the provincial class wealthy under the Regency. Emma is considered by some Austrians to be her most accomplished work. Considered by Sir Walter Scott as a herald of a new kind of more realistic novel, Emma first disconcerts her contemporaries by the meticulous description of a small provincial town, where not much happens outside the events of The daily life of the community. Another essential aspect is that of the novel of learning, the learning of life by Emma herself, who, despite the vivacity of her mind, struggles so much to understand the feelings of others and her own. Other aspects of the novel, taken later, may also surprise us, such as its character of "crime novel without murder", which only a thorough re-reading allows to fully appreciate. Emma has been the subject of several translations in French, the first just one year after its publication in England. After a "forgetfulness" of a hundred years, the novel was serialized in the Journal des d bats in 1910; As is often the case in Jane Austen's French translations, the irony and the "second degree" proper to the author disappear in the adaptation that is made of it. The work has since been regularly published in French, in more or less faithful translations-adaptations.

The novel did not receive any critical attention when it was initially published; the first particular notice was in 1821, in a positive review of each of the published novels by Jane AustenFanny Price, at age 10, is sent from her family home to live with her uncle and aunt in the country. It is a jolting change, from the elder sister of many, to the youngest at the estate of Sir Thomas Bertram, husband of her mother's older sister. Her cousin Edmund finds her alone one day and helps her. She wants to write to her older brother William. Edmund provides the writing materials, the first kindness to her in this new family. Her cousins are Julia, age 12, Maria, age 13, Edmund, age 15 and Tom age 17. Her aunt is kind but her uncle frightens her with his authoritative demeanor. Fanny's mother has another sister, Mrs Norris. She is the wife of the clergyman at Mansfield parsonage. Mrs Norris has no children and takes a great interest in her nieces and nephews. William joins the Navy as a midshipman not long after Fanny is at Mansfield Park. He visits them once before going to sea, and writes to his sister.

This epistolary novel, an early complete work that the author never submitted for publication, describes the schemes of the main character-the widowed Lady Susan-as she seeks a new husband for herself and one for her daughter. Although the theme, together with the focus on character study and moral issues, is close to Austen's published work (Sense and Sensibility was also originally written in the epistolary form), its outlook is very different, and the heroine has few parallels in 19th-century literature. Lady Susan is a selfish, unscrupulous and scheming woman, highly attractive to men, who tries to trap the best possible husband while maintaining a relationship with a married man. She subverts all the standards of the romantic novel: she has an active role, she is not only beautiful but intelligent and witty, and her suitors are significantly younger than she is (in contrast with Sense and Sensibility and Emma, which feature marriages by their female protagonists to men who are 16 years older). Although the ending includes a traditional reward for morality, Lady Susan herself is treated more leniently than the adulteress in Mansfield Park, who is severely punished.
