Emma was the last novel that Jane Austen published while alive. In it, she tells us about the adventures of Emma Woodhouse, a young English woman raised in a wealthy family who not only does not have the slightest intention of getting married, but also insists on being a matchmaker for her circle of friends. In particular, for her prot g Harriet Smith. Emma's advice produces all kinds of misunderstandings and embarrassing situations, which translates into a fun work that, two centuries after its appearance, continues to delight readers.

Eight years ago, Anne Elliot broke off her engagement to the dashing young naval officer Frederick Wentworth on the advice of a friend. Now twenty-seven and considered a faded beauty, she is resigned to a spinster's life when she learns that Wentworth, now a captain and wealthy with prize money from the Napoleonic Wars, has returned. While Anne visits her married younger sister Mary, Wentworth pays frequent calls on Mary's two charming sisters-in-law. Although Anne tries to avoid him she cannot, and although she knows he has not forgiven her, his presence is a constant reminder of what she has lost. Published posthumously in 1818, Persuasion is both a delightful romantic comedy and an insightful exploration of our need to persuade, and be persuaded, by others. Come on a playful romp back to Regency England While staying true to every word of the beloved classic love story by Jane Austen, our "Love's Mysteries Revealed" 3-volume series seamlessly interweaves a deliciously fleshed out historical romance, with added hijinks, diversity and delightful intrigues. In Volume 1, Elizabeth Bennet has no idea her own virtue is in danger when she comes to rescue her beloved sister Jane, marooned by their mother's indiscreet ploy in the home of her potential sweetheart Mr. Bingley. Elizabeth expects only displeasure at Netherfield, especially with Bingley's insufferably proud, rich friend Mr. Darcy in the house. Over the course of a week drawing room dramas and debates certainly ensue. But she also discovers secret pleasures to entertain her: among them, a hidden pool in the wood, a very interesting book in Bingley's library, and a vision of a mysterious Eros that sparks a fantasy of her own ideal man. Through a series of mischievous awakenings, indulgences, mistaken identity and intrigues, a very repressed Darcy fights his growing infatuation with a very high-spirited Elizabeth, whom he sees as a gold-digging temptress. While it's true her family is not so well off as the Bingleys and Darcys, she is a gentleman's daughter and won't be intimidated by elites. In fact, she detests Darcy, though he is gorgeous, and is amused by his apparent cat-and-mouse flirtation with Bingley's snobbish sister Caroline. While carefully preserving her reputation as a modest young woman, Elizabeth pines for a mysterious Eros she can never be with...or can she? Elizabeth is faced with a terrible decision when the heir to the Bennets' family home Longbourn, the clergyman with a peculiar habit, Mr. Collins, comes to choose a wife from among the five Bennet daughters. Must she sacrifice herself in order to save her family from ruin? Her best friend Charlotte has quite a surprise in store for her, and Elizabeth's belief in love is threatened. But when the handsome soldier Mr. Wickham also comes to town, she believes she has found her ideal man at last. A perfect storm brews for more mischief to come in Volume 2 of "Love's Mysteries Revealed." Exam board: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, WJEC; CXC Level & Subject: GCSE English Literature; Cape Literatures in English First teaching: September 2015; 2016 Next exam: June 2025 This edition of Pride and Prejudice is perfect for GCSE-level students: it comes complete with the novel, plus an introduction providing context, and a glossary explaining key terms. ‘She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.’ Such is the unpromising start to one of the most well-known relationships in English literature. Can vivacious, intelligent, but fortuneless Elizabeth Bennet and the wealthy, reserved and seemingly haughty Mr Darcy see past their first impressions of one another? Jane Austen’s 1813 novel paints a witty picture of Georgian society, showing through the ups and downs of the five Bennet sisters the lengths to which women must go to secure a husband and position – and, in Elizabeth’s case, to find a marriage of true minds.

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. 'She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older: the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning.' Written at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Persuasion is a tale of love, heartache and the determination of one woman as she strives to reignite a lost love. Anne Elliot is persuaded by her friends and family to reject a marriage proposal from Captain Wentworth because he lacks in fortune and rank. More than seven years later, when he returns home from the Navy, Anne realises she still has strong feelings for him, but Wentworth only appears to have eyes for a friend of Anne's. Moving, tender, but intrinsically 'Austen' in style, with it's satirical portrayal of the vanity of society in eighteenth-century England, Persuasion celebrates enduring love and hope.
