Jean Tharaud

From 1917 19, the Tharaud brothers immersed themselves in Morocco while observing the determined imposition of the French Protectorate at first hand. With unique access to both colonial manoeuvres and a now-vanished Moroccan way of life, they settled for periods in Marrakesh, Rabat and Fez to absorb and observe. We join them on visits to the Sultan one day and to the shrine of Sidi Ben Achir part shrine, part mental asylum on another. They watch the son and heir of the Glaoui dynasty die from wounds received in a mountain battle, and lovers weaving and ducking across the rooftops of Fez to reach their trysting place. This is the first translation of these vivacious works into English, giving access to the majesty, the squalor and above all the liveliness of this extraordinary period of Moroccan history.

L'Envoy de l'Archange a t compos par J r me (1874-1953) et Jean (1877-1952) Tharaud la suite du voyage effectu en Roumanie par l'a n des deux fr res fin 1937. Publi en janvier 1939, il n'avait jamais t r dit . Cet ouvrage, qui se pr sente comme une histoire de la Roumanie contemporaine, comporte deux fils conducteurs. Le premier, comme le titre l'indique, est l'itin raire de Corneliu Codreanu, fondateur de la L gion de l'archange Michel puis chef de la Garde de fer, assassin sur ordre du gouvernement fin novembre 1938. Le second est la « question juive , les fr res Tharaud, auteurs de plusieurs livres antis mites (notamment Quand Isra l est roi), retrouvant en Roumanie les l ments de la « conqu te juive d crite pour la France par douard Drumont. En compl ment de L'Envoy de l'Archange, figurent dans ce volume, regroup s sous le titre Codreanu et la Garde de fer, des articles de Lucien Rebatet (1903-1972) consacr s au « Capitaine parus dans Je suis partout l'automne 1938 faisant eux aussi une grande part l'influence juive sur la soci t roumaine du temps.
