Would your child ever forgive you if all the clown fish died? There were no more playful red crabs? And the migrating turtles that lay their eggs on the same beach as they were born on, ceased to exist? Did you know that parrot fish aren't just a kaleidoscope of colour; they actually use their beak to recycle dead coral into thousands of tonnes of sand. When you see the fire-works on the ocean surface light up with its own glittery phosphorescence & the fluorescent dancing nudibranchs, there is nothing quite as magical Every living creature on the Great Barrier reef has a purpose. Who would have thought that a tiny shrimp would clean the teeth of a Moray Eel? The amazing array of breathtaking coral species produces food and oxygen from the sunlight for the fish to survive on. Together this ecosystem miraculously continues to function and when there is an oversupply on one thing, such as female parrot fish, nature balances it out (in this case the dominate female metamorphosizes into the solo male of their school) for survival. There is no show on earth as magnificent as the coral spawning which happens once a year & no other natural structure, so beautiful, seen from outer space then our Great Barrier Reef Despite all of these age-old inbuilt survival mechanisms, our reef is actually now dying, bleaching and species are becoming diseased. It's time the top of the pecking order, we, as humans, stood together and started work on repopulating reef gardens, regenerating nurseries of turtles & shells and doing our intricate part in protecting this critical amazing wonder of the world, on our doorstep The best way is through passion. Passion is not only born through education but nurtured through touching pools, aquariums and other rescue operations in Far North Queensland. This is what we are about- saving the reef for our kids and their kids to come Going on island school excursions to really understand how clever an octopus is and how strong those giant clams can be So much wonder and yet so very vulnerable. A bit like our children. So much to protect them from We grew up in North Queensland on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. We grew up on fresh fish dinners, snorkeling on weekends, collecting seashells and driftwood treasures, chasing ghost crabs, and always looking forward to that next trip out in the boat with Dad. We love the reef so dearly, that we created "More of The Great Barrier Reef" to inspire, educate and share our passion with others. It is not just another story of the ocean, it is a book full of our memories etched in our minds from our life experiences, on some of our most interesting marine life. We want to share this with you. What does your child know about the creatures on the reef? Does the Crown of Thorns Starfish eat the reef? And does the Humphead Moari Wrass eat the crown of thorns? Is the Wrass protected? Did you know we have 6 out of the seven marine turtle species in the world living on the Great Barrier Reef? Have you seen a Spider Shell with eyes? That's the journey this book will take your children on. If we can't sustain the reef's current status, we will be left with devastation, and our future generations will not be able to witness the wonder that is our Great Barrier Reef. Read this book to your child and start a conversation about conservation. Our book will take you there and back and your adventure will teach you that this reef is part of our ecosystem to enjoy, explore, protect and fight for. Just like our perfectly created kids who we are reading this book to Exactly like the kids we are reading this book to

A beautiful and gripping psychological novel about a mother and daughter who, after a lifetime on the run from a dark and dangerous past, land in a small Michigan town that may hold the key to ending their fugitive lifestyle. For Blue Lake's entire life, she and her mother, Scarlet, have been on the run from HIM--the man who Scarlet, a talented and enigmatic painter, insists is chasing them. But now, at fifteen years old, Blue has begun to resent the nomadic life that once seemed like an adventure, increasingly unsure what to make of the phantom pursuer she's never seen. She only yearns to settle down in one place, to live a normal life. When Scarlet and Blue arrive in the beachfront town of South Haven, Michigan, it seems that Blue's wishes might finally come true. She makes a good friend, is falling in love for the first time, and has found a piano teacher who recognizes her budding talent. But even as Blue thrives, she cannot shake her worry about her mother, whose eccentricities and art are only becoming increasingly difficult to understand. Scarlet, meanwhile, has very different intentions for their stay in South Haven. It was no accident that she brought them there and, with the help of the psychoanalyst she's sought out, Henry, she is determined to find a way to finally escape the shadow of her traumatic past, no matter the cost. Told through the alternating voices of Blue, Scarlet, and Henry, Scarlet in Blue is a page-turning story about the ramifications of past trauma, the way art can hold our lives together, and, most of all, the enduring bond between mother and child.

One woman's incredible story of life on the front lines as an emergency medical worker in New York City. On the streets of New York City, EMTs and paramedics do more than respond to emergencies; they eat and drink together, look out for each other's safety, mercilessly make fun of one another, date one other, and, most crucially, share terrifying experiences and grave injustices suffered under the city's long-broken EMS system. Their loyalty to one another is fierce and absolute. As Jennifer Murphy shows in the gripping and moving First Responder, they are a family. A dysfunctional family, perhaps, but what family isn't? Many in the field of pre-hospital emergency care have endured medical trauma and familial hardship themselves. Some are looking to give back. Some are desperate for family. Some were inspired by 9/11. Still others want to become doctors, nurses, firefighters, cops, and want to cut their teeth on the streets. As rescuers, they never want people to die or get hurt. But if they are going to die or get hurt, first responders want to be there. Despite the vital role they play New York City, EMTs are paid less than trash collectors, and far less than any other first responder makes, even though the burden of medical emergencies fall on the backs of EMTs and medics. Yet for Jennifer and her brothers and sisters, it's a calling more than a job. First responders are constantly exposed to infectious diseases, violence, and death. The coronavirus pandemic did not change that math; the public is just more aware of it. After 9/11, EMT training schools experienced a surge in applications from civilians wanting to become first responders, inspired by rescuers who responded to the terrorist attacks and rushed into the burning towers when everyone else ran out. The same will almost certainly be true post-coronavirus as people are moved by a desire to help in times of crisis in a more direct way. Funny and heartwarming, inspiring and poignant, First Responder follows Jennifer's journey to becoming an EMT and working during and beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. She will bring readers inside an intense world filled with crisis, rescue, grief, uncertainty, and dark humor. First Responder will move readers to a greater understanding and appreciation of those fighting for them--wherever they live--in a world they hardly know or could imagine.

Is drug addiction a disease that can be treated, or is it a crime that should be punished? In her probing study, Illness or Deviance?, Jennifer Murphy investigates the various perspectives on addiction, and how society has myriad ways of handling it-incarcerating some drug users while putting others in treatment. Illness or Deviance? highlights the confusion and contradictions about labeling addiction. Murphy’s fieldwork in a drug court and an outpatient drug treatment facility yields fascinating insights, such as how courts and treatment centers both enforce the “disease” label of addiction, yet their management tactics overlap treatment with “therapeutic punishment.” The “addict" label is a result not just of using drugs, but also of being a part of the drug lifestyle, by selling drugs. In addition, Murphy observes that drug courts and treatment facilities benefit economically from their cooperation, creating a very powerful institutional arrangement. Murphy contextualizes her findings within theories of medical sociology as well as criminology to identify the policy implications of a medicalized view of addiction.

Picasso Lane is twelve years old when her father, Oliver, is murdered at their summer beach house in North Carolina. Her mother, Diana, is the primary suspect . . . at least until the police discover his second wife, Jewels, and his third, Bert. The new widows say they have never met--but Picasso knows otherwise. She remembers the late-night visits, the hushed phone calls, and the whispered planning. Soon, however, it becomes clear that the "perfect murder" was not so perfect after all. Each woman pleads innocence, claiming that she backed out of the plan at the last second. And as Picasso sorts through the lies and half-truths, I Love You More speeds toward an ending that no one will see coming.
