Online dating websites have reshaped the dating world. People who would normally not come into contact with each other can now meet digitally. This, in turn, has redefined how we understand what dating is. This book describes many of the communication dynamics that have been altered in this process. Some of these dynamics are directly linked to the communicative act while some are more contextual. One of the key findings from this analysis is that online dating websites offer a new genre for dating and, in turn, alter the fundamental concept of dating. As a result, the notion of dating has been expanded from a social set of protocols whereby people met, courted and potentially married to a framework that allows for people to simply meet digitally, engage in dialog, consider meeting in person and progressing down varied paths that might involve marriage but not necessarily have that as an end-result. This redefinition is commensurate with how the new communication technologies are not only enhancing the communication process but also fundamentally changing the communication process. This, over time, has the potential to impact what it means to be human.

As the world becomes a more connected place the opportunity for cross-cultural marriages has increased significantly. Such marriages offer hope for the future regarding cross-cultural relations on multiple levels but they also pose challenges insofar as marital partners having different orientations regarding what can be expected in such an arrangement. A cross-cultural marriage opens the door for different expectations to arise regarding what the concept of a marriage is. Introducing children into the cross-cultural union spawns even more fundamental questions. If divorce results then the concept of what a divorce represents is on the table as well.

This report describes Chinese technique in soliciting a potential informant within their HUMINT (human source collection) intelligence program. It posits that Chinese HUMINT practices tend to be reflective of Chinese high-context communication norms in contrast with U. S. HUMINT practices that are more reflective of U. S. low-context communication norms. As such it begins by describing the role of context within daily life in China and then provides theoretical explanation for this Chinese context emphasis. It does so by clarifying the U. S. to be more of a low-context culture and China as being more of a high-context culture. It further stresses that the role of context is a differentiating variable between U. S. and Chinese HUMINT (Human Source Collection) operations.
