I welcome this book on behalf of radiographic practitioners every­ where. It arrives at a time of rapid change within the world of medical imaging where advancing technology and changes in employment conditions are having a major effect on the everyday working practices of those who physically and clinically direct radiation. The development of radiography as a graduate profession within the United Kingdom provides the opportunity for role extension and role fulfilment for radiographers. Moves toward standardized quality assurance and quality control programmes in radiography and radi­ ology include not only the audit of equipment but also working practices. The science and art of image production form the corner­ stone for these working practices where radiographic skills and image quality lead to the provision of a caring, quality service. This book will help the development and continuation of this programme by affording detailed information on a wide range of imaging procedures for radiographers, including positioning and procedural protocols, as well as image acceptance criteria. A major feature of this book is the systematic chronological presentation of its content which makes it a boon to both the new and experienced practitioner as well as those studying for a radiography degree or involved in the first year of the FRCR examination. Elizabeth Unett and Amanda Royle are experienced radiographers and educationists in imaging sciences. They have both played a major role in the development of clinical education programmes for diploma and undergraduate radiography students.

This book is aimed at beginners. If you are totally confused and dismayed at the prospect of undertaking a research project, read on. If you are an expert in research, this is not the book for you unless you merely wish to revise your existing knowledge. Above all this book is intended as an outline and a guide. It does not provide a definitive recipe on how to conduct a research project. You will learn by your own studies which methods and techniques suit you best and how to modify ideas to meet your own requirements. NB Therapist is referred to as she in the text for simplicity. How do you respond to the distress of a man who is sitting before you, in his own flat, towels draped around his shoulders, newspaper wedged beneath the brim of his hat, an upturned frying pan over his hat and a partially filled washing-up bowl balanced on top of the frying pan? He holds the bowl with one hand and a cigarette in the other, while he force fully proclaims the secret services have placed someone in the flat above to drop radioactive dust down on him all day and all night. To start with, you could offer him a light for his cigarette. The most likely medical response would be to consider increasing his antipsychotic medicine, though a cursory glance at his medical history suggests that inpatient admissions and large mUltiple prescriptions of injections and tablets have failed to eradicate the distressing fears that the secret services have occupied the ward above. Perhaps all the increased medication will achieve is to stop him going upstairs intent on retribu tion. It may even leaden his limbs sufficiently to make his current balanc ing act too difficult to sustain."
