The four symphonies by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) belong to the highest achievements of the world classical music. All of them were composed during the period of maturity in Brahms' creative work. When being fourty-three years old the composer completed his First symphony, meanwhile such masterpieces as the German Requiem and the First piano concerto already existed then. The First symphony ? minor, ?? 68 was conceived in 1860, while the working process started during the period of 1874-1876. The first performance took place on November 4, 1876 in Karlsruhe. Otto Desoff conducted it. The first publication dates 1877.
