Access to International English (AIE) har fra faget ble startet opp under Kunnskapsløftet utmerket seg med: grundige artikler som gir både oversikt og dybdeforståelseoppgaver med stor variasjon i arbeidsmåter og nivåskrive- og analysekurs som gjør elevene godt forberedt på eksamen og på å bruke engelsk i dagliglivetDisse sterke sidene ved læreverket er beholdt og videreutviklet i 2017. Markedslederen i programfaget Internasjonal Engelsk har gjennomgått en grundig revisjon og oppdatering. Forrige utgave av AIE kom i 2012, og det har derfor vært både naturlig og nødvendig å gjøre vesentlige endringer i kapitlene om engelskspråklige medier, multikulturelle samfunn og globale utfordringer. Noen temaer behandles nå på tvers av kapitlene, f. eks behandles medias rolle mht. den globale utfordringen terrorisme, mens problemstillinger knyttet til multikulturelle samfunn videreføres i sammenheng med drøftingen av flyktningkrisen i neste kapittel. I kapitlet om globale utfordringer drøftes kvinners rettigheter både i forbindelse med menneskehandel (trafficking) og vannmangel, før en tale av Emma Watson om likestilling tar for seg feminisme på en måte elevene vil kunne relatere seg til. I kapitlet om internasjonal utdanning og arbeidsliv tas tematikken videre i forbindelse med bl.a. problemer knyttet til lik rett til utdanning. Disse «røde trådene» i læreverket gir elevene trening i å forstå globale sammenhenger i en verden som ofte oppleves som fragmentert og forvirrende. Litteratur er fortsatt en viktig del av AIE. I den nye utgaven er mer enn halvparten av de litterære tekstene nye - de fleste også i bokstavelig forstand siden de er skrevet i løpet av de siste par tiårene. Som for sakprosaen er spennet stort - fra «Twitter Stories» på 140 tegn til T. Coraghessan Boyles lange novelle «The Fugitive». Litteratur brukes i alle kapitlene til å gi innsikt i tematikken, som når Kim Z Dales «Die Spy» gir et satirisk blikk på det moderne overvåkingssamfunnet eller «Thirst» av Max Andrew Dubinsky skildrer effekten av vannmangel i USA etter en framtidig klimakrise. I et eget kapittel brukes noveller og dikt til å gi elevene en innføring i litterær analyse. Begrepene plot/theme, point of view/irony, characterisation og setting forklares gjennom analyser av fire noveller og oppgaver til andre litterære tekster i kapitlet og i boka for øvrig. Tilsvarende begreper for diktanalyse forklares ved hjelp av to dikt. I tråd med ønsket om god sammenheng i læreverket, har de litterære tekstene i dette kapitlet tematikk som passer godt sammen med de øvrige kapitlene i boka, for eksempel omhandler diktet «X» av Imtiaz Dharker bl. a. fattigdom og klimaproblemer, mens novellen «Paradise» av Matthew Kneale har kulturforskjeller og ulike verdier som et viktig tema. The demands on doctors and nurses in South Africa and other developing countries are completely different to those in the first world, where most obstetrics and gynaecology books are produced. Difficult issues around abortion and around HIV/Aids contribute to the magnitude and complexity of the field. A straightforward, 'patient's-bedside' manual is long overdue. This handbook, written by contributors from at least five of the seven South African medical schools, serves as a mini-textbook as well as a clinical manual, and in many cases will replace the notes given to students by obstetrics and gynaecology departments.
