Nutrition, Immunology, and Microbiology

Nutrition, Immunology, and Microbiology

Healthcare training programs that require coursework in microbiology and immunology typically focus on diseases and maladies affecting the adult population, but many such issues can be traced to events in the critical window of development, the period from conception to puberty. Yet, nutrition is less often adequately discussed, even though it is a cornerstone of health during the critical window. This text fills these coverage gaps with an emphasis on nutrition, genetics, immunology, and the microbiome. The text also highlights events in the critical window, the importance of the interdependence of lifeforms, and major concepts that link the medical disciplines and basic biology. The initial six chapters focus on events within the critical window, including fetal and neonatal development, nutrition, and the role of the microbiome in health. It also discusses the impact of antibodies, regulatory factors, pathogens, pharmaceuticals, and environmental contaminants that are transferred to the fetus in utero or the infant through breast feeding. Special attention is given to internal protection provided by the innate and adaptive immune systems. An additional chapter is devoted to evaluating medical evidence (including drug and vaccine trials) and a concluding chapter discusses the myths, misconceptions, and controversies in healthcare. Appendix I is included for the student seeking more in-depth coverage of the underlying basic science such as molecular genetics, the role of meiosis and horizontal gene transfer in creating genetic diversity, and the genetics of adaptive immunity. Appendix I also describes the tools of biotechnology, while discussing bioengineering and modern vaccine development. Appendix II describes mammalian diversity and the value of animal models. Reflecting recent medical events, another appendix reviews the immuno-virology of COVID-19. Numerous figures and tables illustrate and extend the text, and a glossary helps the student navigate the thicket of common acronyms in these fields. Nutrition, Immunology, and Microbiology: The Critical Window of Development is an ideal textbook for professional healthcare training programs. J. E. Butler is professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine with cross-over experience in comparative immunology. Kirsten Bennett is a pediatrics registered dietitian currently in private practice with clinical and teaching experience as part of the Pediatrics Department of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the Nutrition and Dietetics Program at the University of New Mexico. Larry Williams served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Duke University and recently retired as medical director at Abbott Nutrition Research and Development. He currently consults on scientific, medical, and nutritional issues. Ekhard Ziegler is professor emeritus in the Department of Pediatrics, Carver College of Medicine, and former Director of the Foman Infant Nutrition Unit.

Guided by the Australian Curriculum and the Professional Standards for Teaching School Geography (GEOGstandards), Teaching Secondary Geography provides a comprehensive introduction to both the theory and practice of teaching Geography. This text covers fundamental geographical knowledge and skills, such as working with data, graphicacy, fieldwork and spatial technology, and provides practical guidance on teaching them in the classroom. Each chapter features short-answer and 'Pause and Think' questions to enhance understanding of key concepts, and 'Bringing It Together' review questions to consolidate learning. Classroom scenarios and a range of information boxes are provided throughout to connect students to additional material. Written by an author team with extensive teaching experience, Teaching Secondary Geography is an exemplary resource for pre-service teachers.

The Relics of Thomas Becket

The Relics of Thomas Becket

In a ceremony of great solemnity in July 1220, almost fifty years after his murder in December 1170, the relics of Saint Thomas Becket, Canterbury’s most famous archbishop, were taken from the tomb in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral where they had lain for fifty years and placed in a magnificent bejewelled shrine in the cathedral’s Trinity Chapel. The shrine, which became the focus of pilgrimage and veneration for generations of travellers to Canterbury, remained in the Trinity Chapel for more than 300 years until its destruction in September 1538 by commissioners acting on the orders of King Henry VIII. The fabulous jewels and precious metals were carted off to the king’s treasury in London, but no authentic record has come to light of the fate of the mortal remains – the holy relics – of Saint Thomas. There are many stories but few hard facts. This book marks the 800th anniversary of the translation of Thomas Becket’s relics in 1220 from the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral to the shrine in the Trinity Chapel. In it, John Butler carefully sifts the evidence about the fate of Becket’s bones when the shrine was destroyed in 1538, and he explores a series of probing questions. Did the monks of the cathedral attempt to hide the relics before King Henry’s commissioners arrived in Canterbury? Were the bones burnt on the orders of Pope Paul III, as many believe, or did they somehow survive? What is the significance of the grave discovered in the crypt of the cathedral in 1888? Against a background of church politics and carefully referencing all his sources, John Butler pieces together an intriguing story of faith, science and romanticism that will appeal to all who relish a true-life mystery.

The Archbishops of Canterbury

The Archbishops of Canterbury

The office of Archbishop of Canterbury is the oldest continuous institution in Britain – older than the English crown and much older than Parliament. For over fourteen hundred years, from Augustine in the 6th century to Justin Welby in the 21st, successive Archbishops have been caught up in the transformation of the country from a collection of feudal Saxon kingdoms ruled by warrior kings to a modern industrial state with a democratic parliament and an established Church - as well as the longest reigning sovereign. Some Archbishops have managed the tension between their responsibility to lead the Church and proclaim the gospel and their obligation to serve the interests of the state and its rulers. Others have lost their lives – three executed by the state, while two have met violent deaths at the hands of lawless mobs. This new Pitkin captures the story of their faith and power, wisdom and folly and explores how high principle is matched at times by craven self-interest.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages

An exploration of how the idea of the Christian God has evolved over the millennia, showing the diverse ways in which Christians have understood the divine. Far from being the immutable "Rock of Ages" He is often assumed to be, the God of Christian history and tradition has had many different and often conflicting faces. 'Rock of Ages?' opens with the emergence of the Biblical God from the pantheon of deities in bronze age Canaan, and culminates in the radical images of God that were appearing at the end of the twentieth-century, providing a historical overview of the different and sometimes conflicting ways in which He has been understood. By examining the ideas of key writers down the ages, whose ecclesiastical or intellectual power has allowed their insights to become embedded in the mainstream traditions of the Christian churches, Butler seeks to answer one central question: Why is it that people across the ages have claimed to have seen so many different and sometimes contradictory faces of the Christian God? Or more specifically: If there is one true God, and if He is known to those who believe in him through the revelation of Himself in history, why hasn't a consistent and unified understanding of Him emerged in the witness and testimony of those who claim to have seen his face? In the best of scholarly traditions, Butler presents his work as a clear account of his own quest for an answer; but although suggesting possibilities, he leaves others to come to their own judgements using the evidence available. Written in a clear and attractive style, this is a book for anyone without any prior knowledge of history, theology or philosophy, be they atheists, Christians looking to explore their faith, students or simply anyone interested in the history of religion.
