British Management Thought (Routledge Revivals)
First published in 1969, British Management Thought is an indispensable text for anyone with a critical interest in the development of British management philosophy, from management teachers, through to informed managers, sociologists and historians. Utilizing detailed documentary evidence, Dr. Child traces and assesses the emergence and development of management thinking in Britain over the last hundred years. He considers the organizational and social problems faced by managers, and how management thinkers have attempted to provide solutions. The book demonstrates how social science research has today brought to light many deficiencies in management thought. By applying the perspectives of the sociology of knowledge, Dr Child examines how and why ideological considerations seriously weakened the practical utility of many management writings. He also discusses the important problems raised for management education by these findings, illustrating this with some of his own research into management teaching.

This book is concerned with the management of organisational change. It focuses on Cadbury Ltd and provides an in-depth study of change within this famous British company. Cadbury Ltd is famous for its pioneering personnel management. One of the purposes of this study is to assess how this established company ethos facilitated change by examining the development and implementation of a capital investment programme that radically changed working practices at the company's Bournville plant in Birmingham. At a more general level the authors develop a theory of organisational change that emphasises the interaction between external market forces and internal management action. This approach unites an emphasis on the structural parameters that limit a firm's capacity for independent change, with a recognition of the vital role performed by influential members of an organisation in initiating and managing change. This book will be of interest to teachers and students of business history, organisational behaviour, industrial relations and industrial sociology.

The Management of International Acquisitions

This book addresses two important areas of concern for managers and management researchers. What are the management challenges involved in the acquisition of a foreign subsidiary? Why do companies pursue a strategy of growth through acquisition when the evidence shows performance is disappointing? In addition to addressing these questions, the authors examine both the acquisitions of foreign companies in the UK and the 'acquirers' themselves. They discuss the theoretical background to the debate over the significance of national management practices as opposed to international norms of practice shaped by global forces transcending national boundaries. They then compare and contrast the management practices of the five countries from which the acquirers covered in this book originate: the UK, the USA, Japan, France, and Germany. The authors' research indicates that while considerable convergence is taking place on many dimensions of management practice, distinct national management styles still exist among acquiring companies. The findings also show that although some policies are generally associated with better post-acquisition performance across the board, no one national approach is more successful than another, so long as it is implemented with confidence, determination, and consistency. Failure tends to follow from a lack of these qualities, rather than from having the 'wrong' management style.

This book addresses three important areas of concern for managers and management researchers. What are the management challenges involved in the acquisition of a foreign subsidiary? Which post-acquisition changes lead to better performance among acquired companies? What scope is there for the retention of national styles of management when building international networks through acquisition? In addressing these questions, the authors examine acquisitions by foreign companies in the UK. They discuss the theoretical background to the debate over the significance of national management practices as opposed to international norms of 'best practice' shaped by global forces transcending national boundaries. They then compare and contrast the management practices of the five countries from which the acquirers covered in this book originate: the UK, the USA, Japan, France, and Germany. This book provides an excellent introduction to the sociology of industry. It comprises of three sections, which in turn address: the relation between industry and other sub-systems or institutions in society; the internal structure of industry and the roles people play within that structure; the social actions of individuals and groups within an organisational structure. It is an excellent resource for students of sociology who have an interest in its application to the ‘world of work’.
