Shadow Boxers is a celebration of arguably the last great era of club boxing in New York. The world of real-life Rockys, a hard masculine world where any man had a chance to fight his way to fame, fortune and glory. In the late 1970s and early ‘80s John Cole spent over five years in New York’s and New Jersey’s seedy gyms and boxing venues, documenting characters with bashed-in noses and unshakeable dreams, an era that no longer exists but which Cole’s photographs capture for posterity.

Generations: The Fishing Families of Hastings is a photographic portrayal from the 1990s to the present day of the men and women of Britain’s oldest beach-launched fishing community. Realised by the photojournalist and Hastings resident John Cole, the book portrays a unique community that may soon become extinct. Generations is in the tradition of such classic photojournalists as Sebastiao Salgado, Don McCullin and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Cole’s images document the passing of a way of working, of skills that have been handed down from generation to generation.

This specially curated collection features four reviews of current and key research on mastitis in dairy cattle. The first chapter reviews the indicators of mastitis and the contagious and environmental pathogens which cause it. It then discusses how mastitis can be managed and controlled on dairy farms, including consideration of dry cow therapy and the use of antibiotics. The second chapter examines the impact of clinical and subclinical mastitis in cows on milk quality, and provides a detailed account of indicators of mastitis. It describes the impact of mastitis on milk composition and quality, addressing its effect on the protein, fat, lactose and iron content of milk. The third chapter reviews advances in dairy cattle breeding to improve resistance to mastitis. It includes sections on both conventional and new phenotypes for improving resistance to clinical mastitis and concludes with a section on increasing rates of genetic gain through genomic selection. The final chapter considers recent research on the prevalence and development of antimicrobial resistance in mastitis pathogens. It shows how consistent diagnostic protocols and recording systems, attention to medical history, appropriate choice of antibiotics and control of treatment duration can all contribute to minimizing unnecessary use of antimicrobials and promoting effective treatment of mastitis.

John Cole wrote with passion about his life, the outdoors, and the glorious rhythms of nature. In Maine, like all his essays and books, draws from his lifelong partnership and his fascination with the natural world from commercial fishing in the waters off Long Island, New York, to chasing stripers in Casco Bay, Maine, to quietly observing the shifting winds that roll across the local meadow and the annual change of seasons, a ritual he finds exhilarating. Cole has gained insight and contemplated potential lessons during his journey. He notes the changes that have come to the world and those that are coming.
