Originally published by Ballinger, this book is a result of an Atlantic Council study of U. S. international relationships on energy. It examines the uncertainties of a political, strategic, economic, and technological nature that are involved in energy supply, as well as the unavoidable certainty of finite resources. The authors compile case studies and commentaries, and recommend actions for the United States and its allies to take to insure the security of our energy supply and the efficiency of its use. They address topics such as: U. S. energy and foreign policy in the 1980's; international energy in the 1980's; and U. S. energy relations with Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, and the Arab oil-producing states of the gulf. Co-published with the Atlantic Council of the United States.

In 1981, the Atlantic Council's Energy Policy Committee, in collaboration with the Japanese Committee for Energy Policy Promotion and the Japanese Institute of Energy Economics, published a joint policy paper entitled 'U. S.-Japan Energy Relationships in the 1980s.' The paper consisted of U. S. and Japanese views on bilateral energy relations, together with a series of joint policy recommendations addressing the security of energy supplies, the need for more efficient use of energy, and the benefits to be derived from closer U. S.-Japan collaboration in these matters. Since this report was released, a dozen meetings between the relevant parties have taken place. It is in the interest of the United States and the other industrialized nations that the economic well-being of the developing countries be enhanced. Adequate supply and effective use of energy at reasonable cost are a necessary underpinning for economic development. The developing countries need assistance in assessing, planning, financing, and implementing energy supply programs. This volume examines the issues and options related to energy supply, use and financing in developing countries. Co-published with the Atlantic Council of the United States.
