The Cromford & High Peak Railway in Colour

Many audacious and improbable schemes for new railways were dreamed up in the nineteenth century, but surely none matched the plan to link the Cromford Canal with the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire using a series of rope-worked inclines. This railway oddity opened in 1831 and somehow survived almost unnoticed until 1967, when there was a flurry of publicity when it closed. The line weaved its way through some of the finest scenery in England and was dotted with crazy gradients and whiplash curves. Here was the steepest normal railway in Britain and the only place where you could see a gradient post saying ‘1 in 8.’ It also used steam right to the end, by which time it had outlived many more illustrious undertakings. John Evans visited the line many times in its later years, his camera nearly always loaded with priceless colour film. His pictures are published here for the first time, giving a unique view of a railway which was full of intrigue and history. Popular today with walkers and cyclists, the route of the Cromford & High Peak Railway refuses to die.

Steam’s final fling was almost over. The early teething troubles with Britain’s new fleet of main-line diesels were also fading into history and British Railways looked forward to a new era of clean, efficient motive power. The period from 1965 to 1975 saw wholesale changes to our railways; author John Evans was out there with his camera to capture the epic transformation that took place. It was a time when unsuccessful engines were swept away, the motley collection of green liveries gave way to a bold, corporate blue, and electric wires started working their way northwards towards Glasgow. Yet this period was especially fascinating because so much of the old railway still survived. Motley collections of elderly wagons could be found on goods trains. Coaches from the 1930s gave way to new, air-conditioned stock. And people still travelled by train, even though the age of the car had arrived. From Truro to Aberystwyth, from Norwich to Carlisle, this colour album offers stories and illustrations to remind us of what, in many ways, were the halcyon days of Britain’s new railway.

Politics, Policy and Practice in Physical Education
Using the example and context of Physical Education, a particularly vivid and comprehensive illustration is provided of the processes involved in the development of the National Curriculum for Physical Education in England and Wales between 1988-1995. The authors draw upon the extensive research to provide an analysis, description and critique of the direct and indirect influences of central government, local education authorities, schools, departments and teachers in the development of policy and practice in Physical Education. The highly political nature of policy developments in education, and Physical Education in particular, is demonstrated clearly throughout. A valuable contribution to existing literature, this book helps students and researchers piece together the last ten years of policy-making in education and offers a new perspective on the future of Physical Education in the United Kingdom.

Well into the 1960s, the steam locomotive held sway on many of Britain's railway lines. As late as 1964, there were thousands of steam locomotives still at work, gracing everything from the most humble freight yard to the pride and glamour of the 'Bournemouth Belle' Pullman service. This book takes a look at those last, lingering days of steam, as author John Evans joins the many enthusiasts who paid their respects in train tickets and photographic film to an era that drew to a close rather too suddenly. He caught precious moments on film as steam was ruthlessly eclipsed, often on lines that themselves were living on borrowed time. Here you'll find Duchesses, Britannias, Bulleid Pacifics and many freight engines on the Great Central, at London stations, and hauling expresses racing towards the south coast. There are some 'hidden haunts' that became his special favourites. They were the places where the pride of Britain's 'Big Four' railways continued to earn revenue for their owners. He also travelled on several steam specials and has delved into his collection of more than 2,000 photographs to bring these workhorses of the Big Four back to life. These pictures are being published for the first time.

Steam's final fling proved a melancholy experience for the many enthusiasts who had witnessed the gleaming giants of the rails in their prime. One day's highly burnished rail tour favourite was the next day's candidate for the breaker's torch. This book takes a look at those latter days of steam, with an unashamedly nostalgic approach. As the modernisation plan gathered force in the mid-1960s, British Railways simply could not cope with a rejected army of steam engines that would previously have met their end discreetly at their own workshops, so a myriad of scrapyards sprang up to deal with Britain's hurried race to abolish steam, while yards and locomotive sheds seemed to have as many rusting hulks as working steam engines. John Evans took his camera to some of these haunts for one last look at some old friends, caught in their final hours. The sheds and yards he visited, like steam itself, are already part of history, but here you can visit them with him one last time. Sadly, almost none of the engines he pictured escaped the cutter's torch, so these are precious memories, published for the first time.
Ancient Stone Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain
Combining a very active career as a prosperous paper manufacturer with the pursuit of various antiquarian interests, Sir John Evans (1823–1908) began the study of geology in the context of a court case over water rights for his paper mills, but extended his interests to the artefacts found in gravel beds in Britain, and in the Somme valley in France. This work was published in 1872, and was translated into French soon afterwards. Heavily illustrated, it describes stone implements from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods, including weapons, tools and ornaments, from cave and river-bed deposits as well as settlement sites. Evans also continued to research fossils, and was highly respected as a numismatist. He was a fellow of the Royal Society, the Geological Society, and the Society of Antiquaries. His son Arthur Evans (1851–1941) discovered the Minoan civilisation of Crete.
