John Forrester’s passionate yet probing engagement with Freud and psychoanalysis is legendary. Here, in six introductory lectures delivered to his students at the University of Cambridge, his range and lucidity bring the evolution of Freud’s thinking and the nature of Freud’s discoveries into sharp focus. With an historian’s eye for context, Forrester explores Freud’s biography, the scientific moment, the radical subject matter of the field itself – sex, dreams, desire, the unconscious, childhood, language – as well as Freud’s development of a new clinical practice. Forrester also explores both the growth of the psychoanalytic movement and the question of what kind of beast it might be as it travels through time and geography. He illuminates the cultural and revolutionary impact of psychoanalytic thinking – not only Freud’s, but that of some of his progeny in the many places where the movement flourished. Freud and Psychoanalysis takes us from Vienna to London, from Paris to New York and Hollywood, from the lab to the couch, to the campus, to film and to literature. This is a slim book that packs a big punch. It invites any curious reader into a field and a way of thinking that shaped the twentieth century.

One twin will become a hero. The other will be hated by the gods. Jeno discovers an immense power while feasting at the table of the gods. But instead of using this power for good, the Goddess Nalin tricks the demigod into traveling into the Realm of Shadows. There Nirat, the dark god of the dead, brands Jeno with the mark of the crow. He threatens the boy's friends and his family, charging him with the task of killing eight high priests. Without the high priests renewing runes of protection around the city, the golden walls of Drathan will be vulnerable to siege. Chiro, Jeno's twin, rises in the ranks of the human army, leading a troop of rangers. When the god Tanir sends word of his support through priest Deseros, Chiro is surprised to find dragons and giants joining their siege of Drathan. After defeating a high elf champion and winning a legendary magical sword, the boy encounters a mysterious dark elf who claims to be a demigoddess. Princess Jasmina offers Chiro and the humans support in the siege, and after communicating with an elder dragon, proves her connection to their god. The twins will come together in the final siege, but despite their reunion, they will grow even farther apart.

One twin will discover the truth. The other will be fooled by lies. Jeno and Chiro never knew they were powerful demigods. Their father, General Thanadol, hid the truth after he stole his young sons away from their mother, the Goddess Leilian. The twins were raised to hate magic, despise the old gods, and to love Tanir, the false god of the humans. When the nightmares come, the twins see their mother imprisoned by a wizard in the magical realm of Sosaram. Chiro, believing her life is in danger, flees Castle Maarn in the middle of the night. Jeno wakes and finds his brother missing. Though he knows it is wrong, he follows Chiro into the forbidden realm, fulfilling a vow to protect his brother. What he finds is a magical realm unlike any other, a realm of darkness and light, a realm of deception and secrets, a realm blighted by the war of the gods. In such a place the humans are mere pawns, driven by hatred, bigotry, and greed. What Jeno discovers about his nature and the truth behind the lies will test the bond between brothers and the beliefs he holds as immutable.

Freud may never have set foot in Cambridge - that hub for the twentieth century's most influential thinkers and scientists - but his intellectual impact there in the years between the two World Wars was immense. This is a story that has long languished untold, buried under different accounts of the dissemination of psychoanalysis. John Forrester and Laura Cameron present a fascinating and deeply textured history of the ways in which a set of Freudian ideas about the workings of the human mind, sexuality and the unconscious affected Cambridge men and women - from A. G. Tansley and W. H. R. Rivers to Bertrand Russell, Bernal, Strachey and Wittgenstein - shaping their thinking across a range of disciplines, from biology to anthropology, and from philosophy to psychology, education and literature. Freud in Cambridge will be welcomed as a major intervention by literary scholars, historians and all readers interested in twentieth-century intellectual and scientific life.

For the battle to be won, he must forge an alliance between old enemies to defeat new foes. When Elendria joins the prince in the struggle against the cultists, he must choose between his growing love for her and his sworn duty to his kingdom. It has been a year since the Nameless was trapped in the Underworld along with her followers. Talis and Mara have rebuilt Naru with Master Goleth's help. The elders of Naru want Mara to become their queen, but she is wary of shouldering the burden. Rikar and Princess Devonia have returned to Carvina to live there and rebuild. But there have been rumblings across the land. Tales of people going mad after worshipping at temples to Zagros. Something strange and foul is rising. Rikar has nightmares of the Nameless returning from the Underworld. It seems the Starwalkers have never given up on their quest for revenge against the Nameless. A foolish quest that will lead to their demise. It will also bring Talis, Mara, and their friends hurtling into an oblivion so dark, they might never escape.

What exactly is involved in using particular case histories to think systematically about social, psychological and historical processes? Can one move from a textured particularity, like that in Freud?s famous cases, to a level of reliable generality? In this book, Forrester teases out the meanings of the psychoanalytic case, how to characterize it and account for it as a particular kind of writing. In so doing, he moves from psychoanalysis to the law and medicine, to philosophy and the constituents of science. Freud and Foucault jostle here with Thomas Kuhn, Ian Hacking and Robert Stoller, and Einstein and Freud?s connection emerges as a case study of two icons in the general category of the Jewish Intellectual. While Forrester was particularly concerned with analysing the style of reasoning that was dominant in psychoanalysis and related disciplines, his path-breaking account of thinking in cases will be of great interest to scholars, students and professionals across a wide range of disciplines, from history, law and the social sciences to medicine, clinical practice and the therapies of the world.
